  • Sears Hometown stays positive despite drop in Q1 profit

    HOFFMAN ESTATELES, Ill. — An unseasonably cool spring and rising costs affected first-quarter earnings for the period ended May 4 at Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, which reported a 27% drop in profit for the quarter. However, the company is focusing on improving signs in late spring.

    Sears Hometown earned $15 million in the quarter that ended May 4, compared with $20.6 million in the year ago period.

    Revenue dropped 3% to $601.1 million. Same-store sales fell 5%.

  • Penney’s New Home Makeover

    J.C. Penney has a lot riding on its new home department makeover. Industry analysts say the revamp, a central element of former CEO Ron Johnson’s plan to transform the chain, is critical to the department store’s future. Home represented 12% of Penney’s sales in 2012, down from 15% in 2011. It was the worst performing category last year.

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores Inc. reported  a 27% drop in first-quarter earnings amid a cool spring throughout much of the country and rising costs.  But the company, a spinoff from Sears Holdings Corp., pointed to improving signs in late spring.

  • NRF survey says Dad’s in for a good Father’s Day

    WASHINGTON — Americans are going to stretch their budgets and spend a little more on dad this year, according to NRF’s 2013 Father’s Day spending survey conducted by BIGinsight. The average person is expected to shell out $119.84 on gifts this year, an increase of 2% from $117.14 last year. 

    Total spending by people 18 and older in the United States for Father’s Day is expected to reach $13.3 billion.

  • Lumber Liquidators names HR head

    Toano, Va. -- Lumber Liquidators, the largest specialty retailer of hardwood flooring in North America, announced the appointment of Sandra C. Whitehouse as senior VP chief human resources officer, effective later this month.

    Whitehouse most recently served as chief human resources officer for Earthbound Farm. Previously, she led the human resources department at Orchard Supply Hardware.

    Stanley Black & Decker is trying a new logo on for size. Although it's still yellow and black and still spells "Stanley," it represents a new brand identity for the iconic tool brand and diverse industrial company. 

  • Conn’s Q1 income nearly doubles; raises forecast

    The Woodlands, Texas -- Conn's Inc.’s net income nearly doubled in its first-quarter, with strong sales of furniture and mattresses and some higher prices. The company lifted its fiscal 2014 adjusted earnings forecast.

    Conn's earned a better-than-expected $22.2 million for the quarter ended April 30, up from $11.6 million a year ago.

    Revenue jumped 25% to $251.1 million. Same-store sales rose 16.5%.

  • Scotts Miracle-Gro board members exit following bad language

    Three Scotts Miracle-Gro board members resigned following the delivery of a unanimously supported reprimand of CEO Jim Hagedorn that stemmed from the use of inappropriate language. 

    Hagedorn apologized in a statement.

    "While I have a tendency to use colorful language, I recognize my comments in this case were inappropriate and I apologize," Hagedorn said. "I, along with the rest of our board members, consider the matter resolved and I have made a personal commitment to prevent a future recurrence."
