  • Founder sells Art Van Furniture to private equity firm

    The owner of one of the largest independent furniture chains in the country has sold his company to a private equity firm approximately 58 years after he founded it.  
  • Microsoft taps LinkedIn exec to head up tech

    Kevin Scott is joining Microsoft in the newly created role of chief technology officer (CTO).   Scott most recently served senior VP of infrastructure at LinkedIn, which Microsoft purchased in June for $26 billion.   
  • CEO of women’s apparel chain out in abrupt departure

    The CEO of Lane Bryant has stepped down just four months after receiving a big promotion.      Linda Heasley has resigned as chief executive of plus-sized apparel retailers Lane Bryant and Catherines, which are owned by Ascena Retail, The New York Post reported. Heasley was appointed CEO of Lane Bryant in 2013, after a successful six year stint as chief executive of The Limited. She was given the additional title of CEO of Catherines this past October as part of a company reorganization.    
  • President of struggling Banana Republic to depart

    The search is on for a new president of Banana Republic, which has had a hard time finding its footing amid dismal same-store sales results.     Gap Inc. said Tuesday that company veteran Andi Owen, global brand president for Banana Republic, will leave the retailer in late February. Gap CEO Art Peck will directly oversee the brand until the company finds a replacement.   
  • Tech Bytes: NRF 2017: Evolve with disruptors to remain relevant

    The trends featured at the annual NRF Convention & Expo never fail to get the tech juices flowing, and this year was no exception.    Sessions and the expo floor illustrated how retail technology has changed dramatically in a very short time. However, the event also relayed a sobering message: the industry needs to greatly evolve to keep up pace with customer expectations, and remain relevant in the long-term.  
  • Former Family Dollar exec takes top marketing position at Lowe’s

    Lowe's Companies’ chief marketing head Marci Grebstein has left the company after 14 months in the position.   The home improvement giant wasted no time in naming a successor, tapping Jocelyn Wong as chief marketing officer, effective immediately. Wong joined Lowe's in September 2015, and most recently served as senior VP and general merchandising manager for the seasonal business. Prior to joining Lowe's, she served as senior VP and chief marketing officer at Family Dollar.  
  • PepsiCo vet to head up Toys ‘R’ Us global marketing

    Toys "R" Us has hired a veteran marketer to lead its global marketing efforts.   The retailer announced that Carla Hassan will join the company as executive VP, global chief marketing officer, effective February 20, 2017. She will report directly to chairman and CEO Dave Brandon.   Hassan was most recently senior VP, brand management for PepsiCo's Global Beverage Group, where she was responsible for driving the growth agenda for brands including Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade.
  • Off-pricer announces senior management promotions

    Burlington Stores is promoting three key executives, with the appointments all effective January 30, 2017.   The appointments include the following:    • Jennifer Vecchio, executive VP/chief merchandising officer since May 2015, will be promoted to the newly created role of chief merchandising officer/principal, and will assume responsibility for the merchandise planning, allocation and MIO functions.
