  • Bookseller names exec to head up new restaurant group

    Barnes & Noble is getting serious about restaurants.   The bookseller announced it has promoted Jaime Carey, currently COO, to president of development & restaurant group, effective immediately. Carey will be responsible for overseeing the chain’s real estate development and its newly created restaurant group.   
  • Starbucks, Shanghai

    The design of Starbucks’ flagship in the new Disneytown at Shanghai Disney Resort was inspired by the craft of coffee and the magic of Disney — and the latest in ordering technology.   Located in the entertainment district just outside the main entrance to the theme park,  the store is topped with a specially crafted wind vane that evokes the playfulness of Disney with the iconic Starbucks siren.  
  • Home furnishings retailer expanding in Southeast

    Ikea is submitting plans to the City of Norfolk, Virginia, to open a 331,000-sq.-ft. store.   Pending approvals, construction of the proposed store could begin in spring 2017, with an opening in summer 2018. The retailer said it would evaluate potential on-site power generation to complement its current U.S. renewable energy presence at nearly 90% of its U.S. locations.  
  • Watch out Starbucks—iconic motorcycle brand adds latte to its lineup

    Fans of Harley-Davidson can immerse themselves in the brand at the new “1903—A Harley Davidson Cafe” in downtown Toronto.   Named for the year the company  was founded, the 4,200-sq.-ft. café features a biker-themed décor inspired by the history of the 114-year-old brand. Folks who have never hopped on a Harley can get a taste of the experience by taking a test ride on the JumpStart ride simulator.

    The idea of Starbucks serving as a “third place” outside of home and work has been reinforced with a new add-in to Microsoft Outlook.  
  • Fast-casual chain in Florida expansion

    PizzaRev, the make-your-own pizza concept backed by Buffalo Wild Wings, will soon be on the march in South Florida.   The company has signed a franchise agreement with Surfside Coffee, one of the largest Dunkin’ Donuts franchise networks in Florida, to develop 45 restaurants across greater Miami. The group’s first location is projected to open at the Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.

  • Retail sales rise in May

    Solid. That’s how many industry analysts described retail sales in May.   Driven partly by rising gasoline prices, sales increased 0.5% in May, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, above the 0.3% gain economists expected. Excluding automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants, retail sales rose 0.2% unadjusted over April, according to the National Retail Federation.
