  • Dunkin’ Donuts has big expansion plans for Dallas

    Dunkin’ Donuts is expanding its footprint in Texas.    The chain signed multi-unit store development agreements with four existing franchise groups to develop approximately 65 new restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth and the surrounding area.     The new restaurants will include several multi-brand locations with sister brand Baskin-Robbins, the world's largest chain of ice cream specialty shops.     
  • Ten Brands to Watch in 2017

    Brand-building consultant Denise Lee Yohn has released her annual “Brands to Watch” list for 2017. There are 26 companies on the list, with retail and social media brands accounting for 10 of the spots.  Here’s a review:   Barnes & Noble. The venerable bookstore chain has let its CEO go, lowered sales expectations, and shrunk its footprint by dozens of stores. Meanwhile Amazon Books is opening stores. Is 2017 the year B&N’s death will become imminent?!  
  • Quick-serve giant joins Energy Star

    The Wendy’s Company has extended its commitment to reducing energy.   The restaurant chain has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Program and will work to improve energy efficiency through a strategic, corporate energy management program that will enhance the company's energy strategy.  
  • The rise of fresh-casual

    Restaurant retail is in the midst of a revolution.    According to the Urban Land Institute, one of the key factors driving traffic at retail is the rise of new food concepts, which account for nearly 50% of shopping center growth nationally. The first volleys of this revolution were fired by a spate of new fast-casual concepts, but as the movement gains momentum, it is evolving from fast-casual to fresh-casual.   
  • New menu at Dallas-area center

    Among cities with more than 250,000 residents, Plano, Texas, has the highest median income in the land at $104,000. It’s also one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, so Eden’s Preston Towne Crossing and Berkeley Square in Plano have expanded and upgraded their food and beverage options in kind.   Recently opened at Preston Towne Crossing are SusieCakes Bakery, a specialist in old-fashioned sweets, cookies, and cakes, and Vom Fass, a purveyor of cask-aged vinegars, oils, wines, and spirits.  
  • Leasing firm: 2016 volume has been hot

    Levin Management president Matthew Harding says 2016 has been an especially active year for new retail leases. Over the past nine months, he reports his company handled leasing activity for more than 500,000 sq. ft. — over 400,000 sq. ft. of that in retail.   
  • The New Overtime Rule: Q&A with Fazoli’s CEO

    With some 2,975 team members in its 123 company-owned restaurants and support center, Fazoli’s, the nation’s largest fast-casual Italian restaurant chain, is addressing the Department of Labor’s new overtime rule head on.   • Whole Foods wooing shoppers with in-store restaurants, bars

    Whole Foods Market is upping its game.   In the face of growing competition, the supermarket chain has been adding restaurants, bars and tap rooms to its stores, reported The Orange County Register.    In select locations in California, Whole Foods is adding in-store outposts of a popular fast-casual eatery, Mendocino Farms, to its stores.   
  • New pads planned for NRDC properties in New Jersey

    National Realty & Development Corp. has announced that new pad buildings will begin going up at two of its centers in New Jersey.   McDonald’s will enter Liberty Square Center in Burlington with a newly constructed 3,911-sq.-ft. store on one of the property’s outparcels. The 380,383-sq.-ft. Liberty Square is anchored by Walmart Supercenter, Acme, Marshalls, and Toys “R” Us.     
  • Shake Shack tests mobile ordering

    Fast-casual eatery throws its hat into the mobile app arena.   Eager to take advantage of mobility, Shake Shack introduced a mobile app that includes an ordering platform. Designed on Apple’s iOS platform, the Shack App invites guests to place orders through their smart phone, and pick up meals at its “Midtown East Shack” in New York City. This single location test will be ongoing.
