  • A busy month for Mac Naughton

    Suppliers to Walmart will have plenty of opportunities to hear from Walmart EVP merchandising Duncan Mac Naughton in the months ahead.

    First up is Walmart’s annual meeting for financial analysts held each fall and slated for Oct. 11 to 12 this year. An agenda isn’t yet available, but Mac Naughton presumably will be a featured participant, or at least he should be considering Walmart’s ongoing efforts to revive U.S. sales and recent moves Mac Naughton has made to the structure and leadership of the merchandising organization.

  • New execs named at Molson Coors

    DENVER and MONTREAL — Molson Coors Brewing Company announced that Torsten Kuenzlen, formerly president director of Coca-Cola’s Indonesia region, has joined as Molson Coors International's new CMO. Celso White, former VP and general manager, Americas concentrate operations at PepsiCo, has joined as MCI’s new chief supply chain Officer. In addition, Lee Reichert, formerly a partner with Lathrop & Gage LLP, has joined MCI as general counsel. All of the executives will be based in Denver, Colo.

  • NRF Survey; Department stores and apparel stores attract last-minute back-to-school shoppers

    Washington, D.C. -- A survey released Tuesday by the National Retail Federation and conducted by BIGresearch showed that department stores, clothing stores and websites are expected to attract most of the last-minute back-to-school purchases.

    According to NRF’s 2011 Back-to-School survey, the average family has completed 43% of shopping for K-12 students, similar to last year’s 43.2%. College students and their parents have completed 44.3% f their shopping, up slightly from last year’s 43.1%.

  • Regency Centers acquires center in Davis, Calif.

    Davis, Calif. -- Regency Centers, a national owner, operator and developer of grocery-anchored and community shopping centers, closed on the acquisition of Oak Shade Town Center, a 103,762-sq.-ft. neighborhood shopping center anchored by Safeway, Rite Aid and OfficeMax in Davis, Calif. The center is located within a mile of the University of California, Davis.

    The property was purchased on August 18 for $35 million from the center’s original owner. 

     

  • Spencer Gifts to make Manhattan debut

    New York City -- Spencer Gifts, a mainstay of malls across North America, has leased its first-ever location in Manhattan. The 60-year-old chain operates more than 600 stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

    As one of Spencer’s few free-standing locations, the store, located downtown near New York University, encompasses over 1,840 sq. ft. on the ground floor. It is due  to open in advance of the holiday season.

  • Turn those awkward photos into college cash from Meijer

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer and Dr. Pepper announced that they are often students the  chance to turn those awkward photos into money for college. Through August 27 participants can go to the Meijer Facebook page and upload their photos for a chance to win free tuition for a year (maximum value $20,000).

    According to NRF’s 2011 Back-to-School and College surveys conducted by BIGresearch, consumers with smartphones and tablets will use their devices to research products, redeem coupons, look up store information, and even make purchases.
