Giant Eagle expands mobile promotions offering to include payment
Giant Eagle shoppers who use the Upside personalized promotional app can now make secure mobile payments and receive cash back.
The Pittsburgh-based regional food, fuel and pharmacy retailer has been offering customers the Upside app, which provides personalized cash back promotions, since an initial pilot in September 2023.

Now, Giant Eagle is launching the Upside Pay secure mobile payment option across all of its stores. Upside Pay provides instant cash back at the register with no receipt uploads required and allows customers to apply their cash back balance directly at the register. Customers also still have flexibility to pay with a card and upload receipts in the Upside app.
"We’re always looking for ways to enhance the in-store experience, and Upside Pay is making a clear impact," said Giant Eagle executive VP, chief marketing and merchandising officer Justin Weinstein. "Customers are showing us it makes their trips more rewarding, and that enthusiasm is translating into stronger loyalty."
Results Giant Eagle recorded following the conclusion of its initial Upside pilot in 2024 (after which widescale rollout began) included:
- On the fuel side, Upside transactions drove a 2.2x sales lift, compared to similar non-Upside customers.
- In grocery, Giant Eagle stores used the platform to engage new and infrequent customers that are typically hard-to-reach, with 10% of Upside users entirely new to Giant Eagle and 40% infrequent Giant Eagle customers that were coming in-store more often.
- More than half (56.4%) of the new/non-loyalty users that Upside brought in chose to join the retailer’s myPerks rewards program during or after their first use of Upside.
"With Upside Pay, Giant Eagle customers get more value instantly, and Giant Eagle sees measurable sales growth with seamless implementation,” said Upside president, retail go-to-market Nick Worswick. “It’s proof that when the shopping experience is easy and more rewarding for customers, both sides benefit.”
