Target Corp.’s first-ever location in the tony beach hamlet of Bridgehampton, N.Y., features an elevated design inspired by a classic Hamptons house — along with some new elements for the retailer.

While Target approaches most new stores based on a standard prototype, it can flex with the needs of a community. In Bridgehampton, that meant working within the town’s design guidelines, which emphasized an understated, coastal aesthetic. (Located in the Bridgehamptons Commons shopping center in a space that formerly housed one of the last Kmart locations in the U.S., the roughly 90,000-sq.-ft. store is one of eight new locations Target is opening this October.)

Exterior

Unlike a typical Target façade awash in the retailer’s signature red, the exterior of the Bridgehampton store features grey shingles trimmed in white. The company’s iconic round bollards are painted grey instead of red to fit within guidelines.

In addition, since only signage is allowed to have exterior lighting, the Target team designed a white bulleye logo that is lit from above.

The exterior welcomes customers with a front porch element complete with Adirondack chairs, plants with native plants and trellises. The city doesn’t typically allow these elements in front of a store, Target said, but its team met with local leaders to explain that it was trying to encourage people “To slow down, stop and enjoy the moment.”

Fitting Rooms

The fitting rooms also have a different look. Each is designed as a beach cabana, with small porthole windows on the doors, coastal artwork and shutters. The custom wallpaper, designed by Target creative team, in inspired by the toile wallpaper found in the Hamptons. But it’s been given a bullseye spin, with the chain’s familiar mascot depicted amid familiar Hamptons landmarks.

Wicker globe light shades, walnut benches, custom coat hooks and mirrors, and stenciled waves on the store’s concrete floor add another touch of local flavor to the store.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, Target operates more than 2,000 U.S. stores in addition to its e-commerce business.
