DoorDash enables recipe-based grocery shopping in ChatGPT
DoorDash is the latest retail entity to extend its operations into a leading-edge artificial intelligence model.
The on-demand delivery platform is making its app available within the OpenAI generative AI model ChatGPT to streamline the creation of recipes and purchase of ingredients. Customers can go to their ChatGPT account settings, open the “apps” section, select DoorDash, and log into their DoorDash account.
Once they open a chat, shoppers can toggle DoorDash on using the plus button beside the text field to start using the app in their chat to ask ChatGPT for meal or recipe suggestions in conversational language (such as “give me ideas for a hearty soup”) and receive recipes tailored to their preferences.
After settling on a recipe, customers can then ask ChatGPT to shop it using the DoorDash app. The DoorDash app in ChatGPT will turn the ingredients into a shoppable grocery list within the chat. When ready to place their order, shoppers can open their cart in the DoorDash app to review items, make adjustments and complete their purchase from a nearby store.
"AI is unlocking an entirely new search and discovery experience for consumers that’s dynamic and personalized," said Andy Fang, co-founder at DoorDash. "We're thrilled to partner with OpenAI to create a seamless experience that allows users to quickly order ingredients for any recipe and check out directly on DoorDash. As we expand this experience to more shopping categories, our focus is on building AI tools that give people time back and make local shopping easier."
The selection of products available via the DoorDash-ChatGPT integration spans national retailers like Kroger and Safeway, as well as regional chains like Bi-Rite, Schnucks, Fairway Markets and Wegmans.
"The DoorDash app in ChatGPT is another step toward bringing our vision to life—where AI connects directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their everyday lives," said Nick Turley, VP, head of ChatGPT.
DoorDash, Instacart explore advanced AI
DoorDash is also currently piloting Zesty, a new food discovery app that lets customers use natural language prompts to search for and receive personalized recommendations of local restaurants to order food from or visit for table service.

Meanwhile, chief DoorDash rival Instacart recently launched a ChatGPT app experience with instant checkout on desktop and mobile web, as well as an Instacart ChatGPT app with instant checkout rolling out to the iOS and Android platforms in the coming weeks.
Walmart and Sam’s Club also recently began enabling shoppers to complete purchases directly within ChatGPT. Other retailers offering ChatGPT-enabled shopping include Target and online retailer Etsy. PayPal will allow its users to make purchases directly within ChatGPT beginning in 2026.
The DoorDash app in ChatGPT is currently live for select users and will expand to all customers in the coming weeks across iOS, Android, desktop, and mobile web. The company also intends to expand the integration beyond the grocery category.
