  • Sam’s Club takes ‘shot’ at greater health role

    Flu shots and nine other immunizations will now be offered year round by Sam’s Club pharmacists at more than 560 U.S. locations as the retailer looks to enhance member value and attract new members.

    Beginning this month, Sam’s will begin offering flu shots and immunizations for diseases such as pneumonia, shingles, whooping cough, chickenpox, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), meningitis, HPV (human papillomavirus) and hepatitis A and B.

  • Try before you buy – a membership – at Sam’s Club

    Back-to-school shoppers get a free three day pass at Sam’s Club beginning August 2, as part of an initiative to increase membership at the warehouse club.

    Sam’s is inviting shoppers to visit its more than 600 clubs beginning Friday, August 2, without paying any type of membership fee or non-member surcharge. The retailer has conducted similar open house events in the past as a means to expose shoppers to the Sam’s Club experience and hopefully convert a meaningful number to dues-paying members, at either the $45 base membership level or $100 Plus member level.

  • GNC expands footprint in China

    PITTSBURGH — GNC is no stranger to China, with more than 60 store-within-a-store locations in eight different major grocery, convenience and health and wellness chains in China. But two years after entering the market, the retailer is opening its first stand-alone location in Shanghai.

    GNC plans on opening an additional 25 locations in China within the next 12 months.

  • GNC opens first standalone China store

    Pittsburgh -- GNC Holdings Inc. on Monday opens its first freestanding store in China. The store, located in the Raffles City complex in Shanghai, is the first of about 25 standalone stores GNC plans to open in China during the next 12 months.

  • Abilene Sam’s Club relocates

    Abilene, Texas -- Sam’s Club will open a 136,000-sq. ft. relocated club today in Abilene, Texas. Mayor Norm Archibald and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Redcoat Committee are scheduled to attend the grand opening.

  • Sam's Club exec heads to Family Dollar

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Former Sam’s Club executive Jason Reiser is heading to Family Dollar to be the company's SVP of merchandising. He replaces John Scanlon, who left the company at the end of March.

    Family Dollar announced the key changes to its merchandising organization on the heels of better-than-expected third quarter results for fiscal 2013 ended June 1. 

  • Family Dollar’s Q3 net income drops 3%; announces merchandising changes

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar reported lower net income in the third quarter of 2013 as its shoppers continue to hold off on discretionary spending.  The discounter also named Jason Reiser to the position of senior VP merchandising.

    Family Dollar posted net income of $120.9 million, down 3% from $124.5 million in the year-ago period. Its results, however, topped expectations.

    Sales rose 9% to $2.57 billion. Same-store sales increased 2.9% as a result of higher customer transaction totals and traffic volumes.
