  • Three Tech-Themed Sessions at SPECS

    Chain Store’s Age’s 51st annual SPECS Conference starts on March 15, at the Sands Expo at the Venetian/Palazzo Hotel, Las Vegas. The conference is focused on store planning/design, equipment, construction and facility services — all areas where technology is beginning to play an increasingly important role. Here are three SPECS sessions where the role of technology will be highlighted:

  • Google opens first shop in London

    Another online company has entered the physical retail space: Google has opened an in-store shop in Currys PC World, on Tottenham Court Road in London.

  • Google opens its first-ever branded retail space

    New York -- Yet another online company has entered the physical retail space: Google has opened an in-store shop in Currys PC World, on Tottenham Court Road in London. It is the first time the Internet giant has opened a retail space under its own name, and two additional shops are slated to open later this year, in Currys PC World’s Fulham and Thurrock locations.

  • Survey: Consumers not that interested in mobile payment

    New York - U.S. consumers are no more interested in paying for purchases using mobile phones than they were six months ago, when Apple unveiled Apple Pay. According to a new poll of 1,000 U.S. adults from CreditCards.com, 17% of respondents said they would pay for items using a cellphone "always" or "most of the time" if they could.

  • Should branded manufacturers sell directly to consumers online?

    It's the question on many branded manufacturers’ minds at the moment. Either you’re starting to think about ways to sell directly to consumers, or you’re brainstorming ideas to enhance your online strategy. E-commerce has shaken up the traditional model of selling solely to wholesalers and retailers. It’s also presented brands with new ways to engage with consumers and increase sales.

  • Report: Google plans Android Pay release in May

    Mountain View, Calif. – Apple Pay may have some new competition this spring. Google is reportedly planning to release an Android-based digital payment API known as Android Pay at its Google I/O conference in May 2015.

    According to Ars Technica, Android Pay would integrate into retailers’ mobile apps but could also be used at physical checkout stations. Similar to Apple Pay, consumers would upload credit or debit card information to Android Pay and pay by tap.

  • Report: Google tests live chat within search results

    Mountain View, Calif. – Google is reportedly testing the inclusion of live chat with businesses linked directly within search results. According to TechCrunch, a search results card will show consumers whether a business they have search for is available for chat, and then immediately launch a Google Hangouts chat if help is in fact available.

  • Google in deal to fuel growth of its mobile payment service

    New York -- The mobile payments war continues to heat up. In a post on its blog, Google said it partnering with the three of the nation’s largest wireless carriers — AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile — to bring its Google Wallet mobile payment app to their Android phones later this year.  

    Google also said it has purchased some technology and intellectual property from payments firm Softcard (formerly known as Isis) to make Google Wallet better.
