  • Family Dollar arrives in California

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar is expanding into California for the first time with the opening of four new stores in Ontario, Rialto, Riverside and Fontana. The company's aggressive growth plans also include 450 to 500 new stores to be opened in fiscal 2012.  

  • Family Dollar names legal VP

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Tuesday it has named Beth MacDonald to the position of VP – assistant general counsel and assistant secretary.

    MacDonald, previously a partner in the Charlotte office of law firm Alston & Bird, joined Family Dollar in 2010 as divisional counsel - securities and was promoted to assistant general counsel in April.
     

  • Family Dollar appoints Edward Garden to board

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — The chief investment officer of Trian Fund Management has been named to the board of directors at Family Dollar, the retailer announced.

    Edward Garden's appointment as board member is effective immediately. With this appointment, Family Dollar's board expands to 11 directors.

  • Family Dollar to open 450 to 500 stores in new fiscal year; Q4 profit up 8%

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores announced Wednesday that it plans to open 450 to 500 new stores in fiscal 2012, a 50% jump compared with the number of openings in fiscal 2011, and will renovate, relocate or expand over 1,000 locations. The discounter also reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter net income rose 8%.

    “In fiscal 2012, we intend to accelerate investments to drive sales and profitability,” said Howard Levine, chairman and CEO.

  • New execs named at Family Dollar

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores announced that it has named Michael Bloom to the position of president and COO and promoted Dorlisa Flur to the position of vice chair strategy and chief administrative officer. Both Bloom and Flur will report to Howard Levine, chairman and CEO. These appointments follow the announced retirement of R. James Kelly as Family Dollar’s president and COO after 15 years with the company.

  • Family Dollar names VP of food

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores has named Trey Johnson to the newly created position of senior VP – food.

    Johnson comes to Family Dollar from Sears Holdings where he created a limited assortment food concept for K-Mart. He also led the development of Wal-Mart’s Marketside format as its chief merchandising officer.
