  • Report: Back-to-school spending to jump 33%

    Shoppers are opening their pocketbooks for back-to-school spending this year.   Parents expect to spend an average of $1,642 on back-to-school expenses this year, up significantly from $1,239 in 2015, according to the American Express Spending & Saving Tracker report.   Parents are expected to spend more on musical instruments this ($267 vs. $194 in 2015), along with mobile devices ($172 vs. $125 in 2015).   
  • Drug store giant launches its own mobile payments solution

    CVS Health on Thursday announced the launch of CVS Pay, its own end-to-end mobile payment solution. It is the pharmacy chain's first official mobile payments solution.   CVS Pay – now part of the CVS Pharmacy mobile app – integrates payment, prescription pickup and the ExtraCare loyalty program all in one scan at checkout.    
  • Walmart Canada ramps up Visa feud

    Walmart Canada has begun following through with a June announcement it would gradually stop accepting Visa payments.   On June 11, the retailer issued a release stating it would stop accepting Visa payments across Canada, starting July 18 at stores in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Multiple media reports indicate that as of July 18, Walmart Canada is no longer taking payments via Visa-branded cards at three stores in Thunder Bay.

  • Costco flips the credit card switch

    The American Express card is now history at Costco Wholesale Club.    As of June 20, Costco is accepting only Visa-branded credit cards chain wide.   The retailer made headlines last year when it announced that, after 16 years, it was dropping American Express as its exclusive credit card provider and switching to Visa.   
  • New PREIT loyalty program rewards retailers with shopper data

    PREIT, whose portfolio includes the Plymouth Meeting Mall in Pennsylvania, the Mall at Prince Georges in Maryland, and the Springfield Town Center in Virginia, has introduced a digital shopper loyalty program that rewards participating retailers with customer behavioral data.  
  • NRF asks for PCI DSS inquiry

    The National Retail Federation (NRF) has asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to conduct an investigation into an organization founded by the credit card industry that sets data security standards.

    According to a letter from NRF senior VP and general counsel Mallory Duncan to FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez, the practices of the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI DSS) raise antitrust concerns.

  • Chargebacks 101: What E-Commerce merchants should know

    Credit card chargebacks are a costly reality for online merchants. Chargebacks occur when customers contact their credit card issuers to dispute charges. If an issuer deems a dispute valid, the e-commerce merchant is required to pay the amount owed for the transaction plus a chargeback fee from the processer – which can range from $15 to $100.
