  • Spend Christmas Day with Dollargeneral.com

Dollar General’s nearly 13,000 stores will be closed on Christmas Day, but the retailer is offering an enticing online discount in hopes of making a digital connection with shoppers.

  • OpEd: Fewer Good Tidings at the Mall for Holiday 2015

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, especially during the season to be jolly, but I’m a realist. And though I wish happy holidays for all, I must tell mall retailers to steel themselves for another disappointing holiday season. Deloitte is expecting seasonal sales growth of 3.5% to 4% this year, ahead of inflation but below the 5.2% growth of last year — but don’t expect malls and department stores to see that growth. A disproportionate share of holiday sales will go to the humble discount stores, far away from the fancier shopping centers.

  • It’s an omnichannel holiday at Hy-Vee

Regional supermarket co-op Hy-Vee Inc. is giving customers seamless access to their purchases just in time for the holidays.

Earlier this year, 240-unit, West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee launched Hy-Vee Aisles Online, a new service that allows customers to shop for their groceries, pay electronically and choose to pick up their order or have it delivered to their home. The rollout of the program began in select stores in the Des Moines metro area in April and was gradually launched across other markets throughout the summer.

  • Macy’s gives cash in effort to receive sales

In the final push to capture last minute sales, Macy’s has resorted to giving away $4.5 million in cash to customers at its stores across the country.

The promotion, which was not offered last year, was announced in a press released distributed at noon on Saturday, Dec. 19. The company said it would distribute $10 gift cards to the first 250 customers at 600 of its stores from Sunday, Dec. 20 through Tuesday, Dec. 22. The cards are only redeemable in store and must be used during the three day promotional window.

  • Click and collect not snapping into place

Click and collect services are designed to provide an omnichannel shopping experience that combines the simplicity of ordering online and the immediacy of in-store pickup. But according to the Washington Post, this holiday season many retailers’ click and collect offerings have left much to be desired. [Washington Post]

  • Walmart gives $1.4 billion gift

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation is out with its annual Giving Report which puts a monetary value on all the ways the retailer and its charitable arm sought to make a difference during the 2015 fiscal year.

From a big picture standpoint, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation donated more than $1.4 billion in cash and in kind donations, primarily food, and Walmart’s 2.2 million employees also contributed more than 1.5 million hours of their time outside of work to volunteer causes.

  • AAFES gives overseas troops Christmas gift

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) in partnership with the producers of the film Point Break have devised a novel approach to thanking those protecting American freedom.

  • Survey: Lots more holiday shopping left—and get ready for a busy Dec. 26

Going into the final stretch of the holiday season, a majority of Americans are far from finished with their holiday shopping.
