  • Premium Outlets to make Canadian debut

    Toronto, Ontario  — Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group and Toronto-based Calloway Real Estate Investment Trust announced they will develop the first Premium Outlet Center in Canada. 

    The center will be located in the Town of Halton Hills, Ontario, just 15 minutes outside of Toronto. Construction is slated to start in spring 2012. 

  • CFO offers new insights on an intriguing opportunity

    Walmart CFO Charles Holley participated in the Citi Global Consumer Conference this past Tuesday, and he had the challenge of appearing just one week after Walmart released first-quarter results. Given the timing, it would have been reasonable to expect that he wouldn’t have a lot of new information to share, and while he certainly covered a lot of familiar ground, there was one area that stood out.

  • Macy’s to open at Gurnee Mills

    Gurnee, Ill. — Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group announced that Macy’s will open at Gurnee Mills, the largest outlet and value retail shopping destination in Illinois.

    The nearly 140,000-sq.-ft. Macy’s full-line department store is slated to open in spring 2013. It will anchor a new full-price wing at the center, adding a new dimension to Gurnee Mills’ value shopping experience. 

  • Mill Valley Kitchen opening June 7

    Minneapolis — Mill Valley Kitchen, a new restaurant concept from former Excel Bank CEO, Craig Bentdahl, is opening on Tuesday, June 7, in the Ellipse on Excelsior development in St. Louis Park, Minneapolis. 

    The design of the 5,000-sq.-ft., farm-to-table restaurant was handled by Minneapolis based design firm, Shea Inc. 

  • The Marketplace at Centerra announces new restaurant leases

    Loveland, Colo. — McWhinney Enterprises announced that its Marketplace at Centerra power center in Loveland, Colo., will see the addition of Menchie’s and Buffalo Wild Wings this year.

    Menchie’s is slated to open a new frozen yogurt shop at the end of May, and Buffalo Wild Wings has begun remodeling a former Black Eye Pea restaurant space with an anticipated opening date of August. 

  • Target reveals initial locations in Canada

    Minneapolis  — Target Corp. on Thursday unveiled the first wave of the Zellers sites it will be taking over in Canada, representing 105 locations in all 10 Canadian provinces.  The vast majority of the sites will become Target stores after securing the necessary construction approval for extensive renovation. The stores will open beginning in 2013.

  • Dollar General to make California debut

    Goodlettsville, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. announced that it plans to open its first stores in California in 2012 following successful expansions in such other western states as Arizona and Colorado in recent years.

    “Our California stores will mark a significant milestone for Dollar General, giving us a coast-to-coast presence for the first time,” said Rick Dreiling, chairman and CEO.
