  • Drive sales by cracking SMS code

Almost every major brand has experimented with SMS marketing services. Some programs have been wildly fruitful while others were abandoned after only a few months. Having seen both small and large retailers implement successful mobile marketing programs, there is little doubt that SMS can drive customer engagement and increase revenue.

  • Mall operator reaches out to shoppers

Mall operator General Growth Properties (GGP) is looking to get in touch with customers in a new and very personal way.

GGP has selected Mobiquity to be the provider of beacon-based advertising services for select malls in its U.S. portfolio, including Tysons Galleria (Washington D.C.), Glendale Galleria (Los Angeles), Water Tower Place (Chicago) and Ala Moana Center (Honolulu).

  • Hudson’s Bay Company acquires Gilt Groupe

Leading department store operator Hudson’s Bay Company confirmed months of speculation and agreed to pay what appears to be a modest sum to acquire online luxury retailer Gilt Groupe.

Hudson’s Bay, which operates 470 department stores including Saks Fifth Avenue and the Off 5th discount format, said it agreed to pay $250 million for Gilt in a deal that will add $500 million to 2016, $40 million in adjusted operating profit by 2017 and countless synergies to leverage the combined companies’ infrastructure and customer databases.

  • E-retailers rejoice over Christmas weekend

The three-day Christmas weekend (Dec. 25 - Dec. 27) showed strong consumer interest in online shopping during and immediately after the holiday.

According to Verizon Retail Index, broadband traffic attributed to e-commerce shopping activity increased dramatically starting on Christmas Day to 26% above average daily levels, posting a seasonal high of 30% above normal levels by Sunday, Dec. 27.

  • Fossil brings promotions to life on Instagram

When it comes to reaching today’s consumers, Richardson, Texas-based vertical specialty apparel/accessories retailer Fossil Group Inc. is not living in the past.

“We are focusing on image creation for our social promotions,” said Jencey Keeton, marketing manager, digital branding and global marketing for Fossil, during an interview with Chain Store Age. “Images are now the way consumers are speaking. To be relevant, social platforms must include images.”

  • OpEd: Fewer Good Tidings at the Mall for Holiday 2015

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, especially during the season to be jolly, but I’m a realist. And though I wish happy holidays for all, I must tell mall retailers to steel themselves for another disappointing holiday season. Deloitte is expecting seasonal sales growth of 3.5% to 4% this year, ahead of inflation but below the 5.2% growth of last year — but don’t expect malls and department stores to see that growth. A disproportionate share of holiday sales will go to the humble discount stores, far away from the fancier shopping centers.

  • IDC: ‘Mobile first’ looks like a smart strategy

Retailers who are focusing on mobile as a means of digitally engaging customers have some solid data backing up their approach.
