  • One of the world's fastest-growing character brands opens Times Square flagship

    An Asian brand whose characters were originally created for use as emoticons on a mobile messenger app has opened its first store in North America.     Line Friends, whose characters include whimsical-looking bears, ducks, bunnies and more, has opened a 4,628-sq.-ft. flagship in Manhattan's Times Square as part of the company's global expansion efforts.  It currently operates 84 locations in 11 countries around the globe.   
  • J.C. Penney turns TV show into women's apparel brand

    J.C. Penney has entered into an ambitious partnership with a Lifetime reality fashion show.    The department giant has launched the first-ever "Project Runway" brand, with the collection inspired by the popular show and its design contestants. Currently available in over 500 Penney stores and online, the line made its debut with a summer preview collection featuring designs inspired by season 15 winner Erin Robertson, with the full assortment planned for Sept. 8.     
  • Best Buy creates 'Dyson experiences'

    A consumer electronics giant is making a move to grab some wallet share from the home category.    Starting in August, Best Buy is adding Dyson Demo Experiences – dedicated spaces that will let customers try out Dyson products. Approximately 90 Best Buy stores in the United States will feature the new interactive sections, which will be designed for shoppers to test merchandise.

    Enough of the “retail is dying” narrative that has dominated so many headlines the past few months. It’s way overplayed.

    Brick-and-mortar is evolving, not dying. And it’s full of exciting new players — many of them digitally native — that are infusing the industry with something it can always use: new blood. Here’s a quick rundown of some of these newcomers to the physical space:

  • SHOP TALK

    Trending Stores: No two stores are exactly alike at Warby Parker. But the popular eyewear company’s new store in Los Angeles, above, is a particular standout for its celebration of Hollywood’s moviemaking history. The store combines Warby Parker’s signature library-style design and fixtures with such location-specific elements as a classic movie theater-styled marquee with rotating titles, a Hollywood-themed mural, and a display of movie clapboards behind the checkout.

  • Build-A-Bear Workshop narrows its loss in Q2, plans new stores

    While Build-A-Bear Workshop continues to navigate amid declining store traffic, the company continues to open new stores.   Build-A-Bear plans to reopen a location in the Southern California market at the end of September. The company recently closed a store operating in the Downtown Disney District in Anaheim, California.  
  • Candy retailer acquired with eye to expansion

    The nation's largest specialty candy retailer may soon get even bigger.    BBX Capital Corp. has acquired It’Sugar for approximately $57 million. BBX said it plans to expand It'Sugar, which currently operates 95 locations in 26 states, by opening new retail stores in high-traffic leisure locations.   
  • See’s Candies to open new stores in The Golden State

    A specialty retailer continues to expand its breadth.   See’s Candies plans to open nearly a dozen new or relocated stores by the end of 2017. All new locations will set up shop in California.    The new stores will be located in San Jose, Castro Valley, Manhattan Beach, Paso Robles, Laguna Hills, Glendale and Calabasas. The new locations come on the heels of new shops that have previously opened or moved this year into new or larger locations in Escondido, Windsor and Pleasant Hill, California.
  • Study: Majority of back-to-school shopping will happen in-store

    Consumers are in search of the latest back-to-school deals and experiences — and hitting their local shopping centers to find them.   This was according to the annual “ICSC Back-to-School Spending” survey. The report from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), which was conducted between July 6-July 9, is based on a sample of 1,010 U.S. adults, 18 years of age and older.
