  • J.C. Penney plans 8 p.m. opening on Thanksgiving

    Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney joined the list of retail chains that plan to open their stores on Thanksgiving night to kick off the holiday shopping season.  

    Penney will open most of its 1,100 stores at 8 p.m., the same as Macy's. Last year, Penney opened its stores at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, while rivals Macy’s and Kohl’s opened their doors at midnight.

    Scanbuy, a leading mobile engagement solutions provider, has released its quarterly trend report showing that it processed nearly 24 million mobile barcode and NFC scans in the third quarter this year, demonstrating continuing strong growth in usage and interest by mobile consumers.

  • PetSmart expects FY13 sales growth of 3%-4%

    Phoenix – PetSmart Inc. has issued guidance for fiscal year 2013 for total sales growth of 3%-4%, as well as same-store sales growth of 3%-4%, compared to the prior fiscal year. PetSmart also slightly downgraded previous same-store sales guidance for the third quarter of fiscal 2013 to 2.2%-2.5%, from previously issued guidance of 3%-4%.

  • Belk Keeps Eyes on Omnichannel Loyalty Prize

    Family is all about loyalty, and as a family-owned business, 301-store, Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk, Inc. makes an effort to maintain and reward loyalty from its customers. So when Belk reached its 125th anniversary this year, the retailer decided to launch a campaign that would reward loyal shoppers while also boosting its presence in channels such as mobile and social.

  • Twitter taps Google advertising exec to head up retail

    New York -- Twitter has hired J.J. Hirschle, who directed media and entertainment advertising at Google, as its head of retail, according to various media reports. The hire comes as the online messaging giants works to expand its business ahead of its initial public offering. Hirschle will be responsible for the team selling advertising products to retail companies.

    Hirschle is to start on Oct. 28, the same day Twitter is expected to launch its investor roadshow. Twitter announced at the beginning of October that it plans to go public.

     

  • Made in U.S.A. update on tap

    Michelle Gloeckler, SVP of Home at Walmart and head of the retailer’s domestic manufacturing initiative is scheduled to give an update on the program, its progress and inner workings in Bentonville next month.

    Gloecker was recently confirmed as a speaker at an event organized by the Bentonville Bella Vista Chamber of Commerce for the organization’s Walstreet membership group which consists of Walmart suppliers and service provider companies. Gloecker is scheduled to speak on Thursday, November 14.
     

  • Report: CVS, Starbucks, other retailers coming to Boston’s South Station

    Boston – Retailers including CVS and Starbucks, as well as Tavern in the Square and an independent bookstore, are soon coming to the South Station transportation terminal in Boston.

    According to the Boston Globe, real estate management firm Equity Office says CVS will open a two-story store in South Station in March 2014. Construction, including an elevator and escalator, is expected to start in November 2013.
