  • Japanese plumbing giant opens luxury showroom

    Shoppers can view and try out — but not buy — the innovative product line up from Toto at its new showroom space in New York City.    The world's largest plumbing manufacturer is opening a high-design, experiential gallery to display its innovative bath products in Manhattan’s Flatiron district, the heart of the city's home design industry.   
  • Long-delayed American Dream mall moves closer to reality

    The nearly 3 million-sq.-ft. American Dream retail and entertainment center in the New Jersey Meadowlands has moved one step closer to completion.   On Thursday, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns the site, voted for a second time to issue $1.15 billion in bonds to finance the completion of the long-delayed project after a non-profit group had threatened to file a law suit to block the sale, NorthJersey.com reported.   
  • Shoppers keep spending in check in August

    Retail sales fell more than expected in August after a strong June and a relatively flat July.   The National Retail Federation said that retail sales, excluding automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants, were down 0.3% over July. On a year-over-year basis, however, NRF calculates that retail sales increased 4.1%.    The slowdown in August was broad-based and, notably, there was a drop-off in non-store sales, NRF noted. Clothing sales increased 0.7% in August, driven by back-to-school shopping.
  • Report: It’s beginning to look a lot like a digital Christmas

    Uncertainty among the upcoming presidential election is not dampening holiday sales outlooks.   Indeed, retailers need to be ready to present their holiday best as U.S.-based retail performance over the November through December holiday period is expected to see a 3.2% year-over-year (YoY) lift in sales. This jump is driven partly by a 14.9% increase in YoY sales through digital channels, according to new data from RetailNext.  
  • Commentary: Employers need to pay attention

    In case you missed it, a national Higher Ground Moral Day of Action took place Monday at 30 state capitols across the country and in Washington, D.C. An organization of national and local progressive faith leaders called Moral Revival planned the events to deliver their "Higher Ground Moral Declaration." They called on politicians at all levels “to move away from extremist politics and policies that benefit the few and move toward policies and laws that are just and fair and guarantee a better life for the majority of the people.”
  • Dollar General in hiring push

    Dollar General announced a major hiring initiative to support its continued expansion.   The discounter said that within the next month it intends to hire 10,000 new employees to support planned store openings and fill current vacancies. The chain will hold approximately 600 localized hiring events through September. It is looking to hire both full-time and part-time positions, including store managers, assistant store managers, lead sales associates and store associates.  
  • CSA to select ‘Top Redevelopers’ for 12th-annual listing

    Chain Store Age magazine is accepting nominations for its 12th annual “Top Redevelopers” listing, which recognizes shopping center owners and developers’ retail redevelopment efforts over the last 12 months. Selections will be based on square footage redeveloped between June 30, 2015 and June 30, 2016, financial investment, and project significance.

  • Hotel construction begins at One Daytona

    Construction has started on the first hotel at One Daytona, the $120 million-plus project going up next to the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.   The 105-room Fairfield Inn & Suites being erected by Shaner Hotel Group is a short walk from the track. It will be joined by a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel to be called The Daytona.

    Apparel retailer Nasty Girl, one of the hottest apparel merchants on the Internet just a few years back, is looking for a possible buyer, Women’s Wear Daily reported.  
  • New Lululemon store is a one-of-a-kind for retailer

    Lululemon has opened a new concept store in Toronto that’s unlike anything the retailer has done to date.   The 10,000-sq.-ft. store is part retail, part health food café, part gallery — and part practice studio, according to a report by torontolife.com.
