Pier I Imports is on the hunt for a new chief executive.   The home décor retailer said that its board of directors had  “mutually agreed” with Alex W. Smith that he will step down as president, CEO and a board member, effective Dec. 31, 2016. Pier I’s board is working with Korn Ferry to find a new CEO.  

Chain Store Age is pleased to announce that its sister brand, Retailing Today, has become part of a larger, more robust Chain Store Age, one with greater industry coverage and retail audience reach.   “With the merging of Retailing Today into Chain Store Age, readers and advertisers can expect a comprehensive brand representing the full range of omnichannel retail operations,” said Gary Esposito, group publisher, Chain Store Age.  

On the heels of announcing plans to open smaller, “local” stores, lululemon athletica hopes to further extend the breadth of its brand by expanding its ship-from-store service — just in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season.    The program, which currently encompasses 11 stores, will grow to 65 locations, a move that will streamline fulfillment of online orders, Laurent Potdevin, lululemon’s CEO, said during the company’s fiscal second quarter 2016 earnings call last week.  

A pioneer in mobile ordering and payment capabilities, Subway is making a bold move to keep its digital strategies innovative.  

Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. has won court approval to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy.   The chain’s reorganization plan was approved by the court on Tuesday. Under the plan, the chain will give all its stock to affiliates of private equity firm Golden Gate Capital, its senior lender.   

Students at Boston University have a new, convenient shopping option.   Target Corp. has opened one of its smaller format stores adjacent to the West Campus section of the university, reported BU Today. Similar stores are set to open in the coming months near the University of Chicago and at Penn State.   The 16,000-sq.-ft. Boston store carries merchandise specifically geared toward college students, from food staples like ramen noodles to bedding and bath essentials.  

Photo: Noel Mannion   Noel Mannion, who spent the bulk of his career with the National Realty & Development Corp., has been named the Purchase, New York-based company’s executive VP of property operations.   Mannion, previously managing director of operations, will be responsible for overseeing budgeting, maintenance, repair and improvement projects, billing, lease administration, and risk management for NRDC’s portfolio of more than 78 projects in 14 states.  

If any retail CEO is going to endorse a candidate in this year’s presidential race, Howard Schultz would certainly rank at the top of the list.  

Target Corp. is putting out the red carpet for the opening of New York Fashion Week.     The retailer, in partnership with IMG, the parent company behind Fashion Week, opened a temporary sing-a-long piano lounge at The Park at Moynihan Station (on West 33rd Street), one of the official NYFW venues. It kicked off the fashion event with an opening party that drew such luminaries as Queen Latifah, Christie Brinkley, and Kendall Jenner.  

The fire that damaged a Gap Inc.’s primary distribution center in the Northeast was no accident.   The massive fire at Gap’s DC in Fishkill, New York, was intentionally set, according to Reuters, which cited a report by the New York State Police.   "The ATF National Response Team has concluded that the fire was incendiary in nature. This means that the fire was intentionally set," the State Police said.
