  • Hearing begins on Wal-Mart’s bid for Massmart

    New York City -- Massmart Holdings Ltd. promised to add jobs if Wal-Mart Stores is allowed to buy a controlling stake in the South African wholesaler, CEO Grant Pattison. His remarks were made on Monday at a tribunal in Pretoria, South Africa, that will determine whether Wal-Mart will be able to go through with the deal.

  • Former Supervalu exec joins supply chain board

    Rockville, Md. — Mike Jackson was named to the board of directors of iControl Systems USA where he will also serve in the capacity of senior advisor to iControl president and CEO Tal Zlotnitsky. Jackson is a 30-year veteran of Supervalu veteran who retired from the company in late 2009 as president and COO.

  • Supervalu fishing for seafood sustainability

    MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu announced that it will source 100% of its top 20 wild-caught seafood products from sustainable fisheries or those on a clear pathway to sustainability by 2015. Specifically, these products will be certified from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fisheries, in full assessment, or involved in a Fishery Improvement Project with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) by 2015, the company reported.

  • Levin Management names exec

    North Plainfield, N.J. -- Levin Management Corp. announced it has promoted Harold Harris from VP to senior VP, effective immediately.

    Harris joined Levin as controller in 1985 and was named CFO in 1990. Responsible for all aspects of finance and lease administration for the company’s management portfolio, Harris also oversees real estate tax and financing reviews, human resources, and risk management.
     

  • Zale’s Canadian division signs agreement with Alliance Data

    Dallas -- Alliance Data Systems Corp., a provider of loyalty and marketing solutions derived from transaction-rich data, and Zale Corp., announced a national agreement between Alliance Data's Canadian coalition loyalty business and Zale Canada. The agreement provides for Zale's Canadian brands, Peoples Jewellers and Mappins Jewellers, to participate as the exclusive sponsors in the fine jewelry category in the Canadian Air Miles Reward Program.

    Phoenix -- JDA Software Group and Gladson announced a strategic alliance to provide combined services to their joint customers in the consumer packaged goods industry.

  • RadioShack profit down 30% on costs

    Fort Worth, Texas -- RadioShack Corp.'s first-quarter earnings fell 30% amid higher costs and lower margins. The company also lowered the high end of its full-year earnings estimate.

    RadioShack reported net income of $35.1 million, down from $50.1 million a year earlier.

    Revenue for the three months ended March 31 rose 2% to $1.06 billion, boosted by 11%  growth in mobile devices.
