  • George brings bridal-inspired lingerie to the masses

    LONDON — Walmart's U.K. subsidiary Asda is making it easier for brides to feel special on their wedding day by launching a new bridal lingerie line at its George stores. 

    The retailer has a launched a four-piece "bridal inspired" collection that ranges from 11.50 to 16 GPB. According to Asda this is 1,639% cheaper than the most expensive alternative. 

  • Target completes share repurchase program

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target has completed its $10 billion share repurchase program.

    The program, which was authorized by the retailer's board of directors in November 2007, represents the repurchase of 193.5 million shares, or nearly 23% of its outstanding shares from that time period, at an average price of $51.68 per share.

    Target will continue to repurchase shares under the $5 billion program approved by its board of directors in January, which it expects to complete in the next two to three years.

    Toronto -- Canadian Tire Corp. has been honored with the Globe Award for Best Green Retailing Practices. The award is presented to the company that has demonstrated excellence in executing end-to-end sustainable practices and has made measurable environmental performance improvements to its retail operations.

  • Zara takes Manhattan

    Zara, part of Spain’s Inditex Group, has opened its biggest U.S. location, a 32,000-sq.-ft., three-level flagship on a primo stretch of Manhattan real estate: Fifth Avenue at 52nd Street. The store is part of a 90,000-sq.-ft. retail condominium that also houses Hollister and Uniqlo flagships.

  • Blue Nile names retail veteran as CEO

    Seattle -- Online diamond and fine jewelry retailer Blue Nile announced the appointment of Harvey Kanter as CEO and president, effective March 30. Kanter will also be appointed to Blue Nile's board of directors, effective March 30.

    Prior to joining Blue Nile, Kanter served as president and chief executive of Moosejaw Mountaineering and Backcountry Travel, a multichannel retailer of premium outdoor apparel and gear. Before Moosejaw, he served as executive VP and managing director of Michaels Stores.

    New Canaan Conn. -- Gridiron Capital, LLC, in partnership with the founder and existing  management team of Quality Sollutions Inc. announced the acquisition of QSI.

    NORTHFIELD, Ill. — Kraft Foods has nominated two candidates to serve on the company's board of directors.

  • New merchandising leader arrives at OfficeMax

    NAPERVILLE, Ill. — OfficeMax has named a new executive to lead its merchandising initiatives including category management, strategic product planning, global sourcing, private label expansion and cost of goods sold. The company anounced that  Ronald Lalla has been named EVP, chief merchandising officer, effective Monday, March 19. He will report to Michael Lewis, EVP, president retail.
