  • Hot Topic shuts down ShockHound.com, makes changes to business

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Hot Topic said Monday that it is taking a series of steps it hopes will encourage growth, including closing its ShockHound.com music and merchandise website.

    The teen retail chain said it will write down unproductive inventory and fixed assets that are not vital to the company's strategy. It also said it plans to stop reporting sales monthly in the third quarter.

  • U.S. Supreme Court hears argument in Wal-Mart sex discrimination lawsuit

    WASHINGTON -- The nation’s court is set to hear arguments on Tuesday in a decade-old legal fight that could cost Wal-Mart Stores billions of dollars if the 500,000 women claiming sex bias are allowed to band together in a class action.

    Wal-Mart is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to end the massive sex discrimination lawsuit in which the women are claiming that the retailer favors men over women in pay and promotions.

  • Academy Sports makes Atlanta debut

    Katy, Texas -- Houston-area sports retailer Academy Sports + Outdoors announced Tuesday that it will enter the Atlanta market with a new store opening on April 1.

    The 70,000-sq.-ft. store is located in McDonough, and is the chain’s fourth store in Georgia.

  • Former Walmart marketing exec joins Igloo Product Corp.

    KATY, Texas – Sue Miller Payton has been named director of marketing at Igloo Product Corp. In her new position, Payton will be responsible for all aspects of product marketing, promotion, advertising and public relations, cyber-marketing including all social media, special events and exhibits. She is based at the company’s corporate headquarters and primary manufacturing location in Katy, Texas.

  • CVS promotes marketing chief to expanded strategy role

    Woonsocket, R.I. -- CVS Caremark Corp. announced Tuesday that it has promoted chief marketing officer Helena Foulkes to an expanded role as chief healthcare strategy and marketing officer.

    As chief marketing officer, Foulkes led the launch of CVS’s ExtraCare discount card and its Maintenance Choice program that allows Caremark beneficiaries to pick up 90-day prescriptions at CVS pharmacies or get them delivered through the mail.

  • Costco head named one of the top CEOs by Barron's

    NEW YORK — Costco Wholesale CEO Jim Sinegal has made the Barron’s magazine list of the top 30 CEOs.

    Sinegal earned the 22nd spot on the list. The magazine pointed out his busy travel schedule, which takes him to most of Costco’s 582 stores every year, as well as a recent trip to Asia from which he arrived in Issaquah, Wash., at 8 a.m., showered and was in the office at 9 a.m.

  • Peapod expands in NYC

    NEW YORK — Royal Ahold’s Peapod online grocery service is expanding in New York, according to published reports.

    According to the reports, the new service, Peapod by Stop & Shop, will fulfill orders using the existing warehouse presence of Ahold supermarket banner Stop & Shop, which operates several stores in the city. In addition to groceries, Peapod also offers numerous health and beauty products.
