  • Veteran retailer takes control at Land’s End

    Lands’ End has a new person at the top.   Jerome Griffith has officially taken the reins as CEO of the company, and also joined the board of directors. He succeeds Joseph Boitano and James Gooch, who have served as co-interim CEOs since September 2016, when CEO Federica Marchionni was forced out after less than two years amid an ongoing sales slump.  
  • Off-pricer to open 90 stores in 2017

    Ross Stores continues to maintain an aggressive store expansion strategy.   The retailer recently opened 23 Ross Dress for Less stores and five dd's Discounts stores across 15 different states in February and March. The new locations are part of the company's plans to add approximately 70 Ross stores and 20 dd's locations during 2017.  
  • Report: Aldi launches online in China

    Aldi is ready to introduce its brand to price-sensitive Chinese shoppers.   The German discount supermarket chain plans to start selling online in China this month, a move that will expose Chinese consumers to a selection of German wine, snacks and breakfast products, Reuters reported.    
  • Saks Off 5th continues Canadian expansion

    Saks Fifth Avenue is adding to its store fleet up north.   On Thursday, March 9, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th will open two new locations in the greater Toronto area,      “This month marks our one year anniversary of entering the Canadian market, and we’re excited to continue our Canadian expansion with two new stores in the GTA,” said Jonathan Greller, president, Saks Off 5th and Gilt.   
  • Equity One team named to lead DDR

    Equity One CEO David Lukes has accepted the chief executive’s position at DDR Corp., it has been announced in a press release from DDR. Equity One was acquired by Regency Centers in November to form the largest REIT focused on shopping center development.   Two of Luke’s lieutenants at Equity One will join him in leading the Beachwood, Ohio-based company. COO Michael Makinen and CFO Matthew Ostrower will perform the same roles at DDR.  
  • Food Lion and Hannaford help lead Ahold Delhaize to strong Q4

    Ahold Delhaize’s Food Lion and Hannaford U.S. supermarkets had both strong fiscal fourth quarters and for fiscal 2016, the company stated in an earnings report. Volume growth was particularly strong, more than offsetting the impact of inflation on sales.   Underlying operating margins improved, driven by the “Easy, Fresh & Affordable” strategic initiative and synergies, said Ahold Delhaize.  
  • Another tough quarter for teen apparel retailer

    Abercrombie’s efforts to revive its namesake brand still have a ways to go judging by its fourth quarter performance. But Hollister is on the upswing.    Abercrombie & Fitch Co.’s total revenue in the quarter, ended Jan. 28, fell 7% to $1.04 billion, slightly below expectations.

  • Nasty Gal to live on

    Nasty Gal is getting a new lease on life — but only in the digital space.   The brand, which was acquired out of bankruptcy in early February by British online fashion group Boohoo.com, will live on under new leadership as a pure player. Nasty Gal recently closed its two brick-and-mortar stores, both of which were in the Los Angeles area.    
  • Starbucks to use new upscale format to make Italian debut

    Starbucks Coffee Company will open for business in Italy for the first time in late 2018.   The coffee giant plans to open a 25,500-sq.-ft. Reserve Roastery outpost in late 2018 in Milan, in the historic, turn-of-the-century post office building in the city’s center. The Milan Reserve Roastery will be the first Starbucks Roastery to open in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, and the fifth, globally. It is the first of additional Starbucks stores the company plans to open in Italy.
