  • Stop & Shop honored with LEED Silver for three stores in Massachusetts

    Quincy, Mass. -- The Super Stop & Shop stores in Hyannis, Hyde Park and Wayland, Massachusetts have each received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design) silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. (Stop & Shop has 13 superstores, which are LEED certified.)

  • La-Z-Boy names Pepsico exec new chief HR officer

    Monroe, Mich. - La-Z-Boy Inc. has appointed Barbara J. Runyon as chief human resources officer. She will join the company on Feb. 2 and provide leadership and oversight for talent management, employee engagement, workforce development, and compensation and benefits.

    Runyon joins La-Z-Boy from PepsiCo/The Pepsi Bottling Group, where she spent 14 years in various HR positions of increasing responsibility. Most recently, she served as senior director of HR for the company's Midwest region.
     

  • Petco: Where the Chinese treats don’t go

    With Chinese-made products suspected in the deaths of more than 1,000 dogs it’s no wonder Petco has removed Chinese-sourced food products from its 1,300 stores.

    Petco announced it has completely removed all China-made dog and cat treats from shelves nationwide, including at Unleashed by Petco stores and online at Petco.com. Petco said the move makes Petco the first national pet specialty retailer to complete this transition.

    New York -- Leonard Lieberman, former chairman and CEO of Supermarkets General, which owns Pathmark, died at his home in Hoboken, N.J., on Jan. 2, according to an obituary on NJ.com. He was 85. The cause of death was heart failure.

    According to the obituary, his wife, Arlene, said the cause of death was heart failure.

  • Sam’s Club continues its version of Affordable Care Act

    While Obamacare remains a contentious issue, Sam’s Club has quietly administered free health tests to nearly one million people and plans to continue its ambitious screening program in 2015.

    The first of the monthly screening events takes place Jan. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sam’s Club 598 locations that contain a pharmacy. Ten screening events are planned for the remainder of the year and held on the second Saturday of each month.

  • Safeway to pay $9.87 million for environmental violations

    New York -- Safeway has agreed to pay $9.87 million in penalties as part of a settlement of a civil environmental lawsuit.

    The settlement stems from allegations that more than 500 Safeway stores and distribution centers throughout California improperly handled and disposed of various hazardous wastes and materials, ranging from pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications to batteries and electronic devices, over a period of seven and a half years.
