  • Lowe's to pay $1M in overcharging settlement

    The New York attorney general's office has reached a settlement with Lowe's to refund up to 10% of flooring installation fees paid by more than 16,000 customers.

    The Associated Press reports that Lowe’s, with 64 New York stores, overcharged the customers with a deceptive sales practice that it has since agreed to halt. The retailer had offered installation of carpeting, tile, wood and laminate flooring by third-party contractors at square-foot rates that were applied to materials bought, not those actually installed.

  • Report: HEB to hand out shares to 55K employees

    The New York Times is reporting that Texas grocery chain HEB is planning on distributing some 15% of the company’s shares to employees who are over 21 and have worked at least 1,000 hours in a calendar year. “So many in retail are competing in the race to the bottom, and people are the largest cost. So it seems logical to cut people, and lots of folks are doing it,” H-E-B president and CEO Craig Boyan said. “We think that’s a trap. We believe the race for the bottom cheapens the American experience.

    Ulta Beauty is not only “Ultra-beautiful,”  according to television personality Ellen DeGeneres, it’s also “Ultra-generous.”

    Capping off a partnership during the month of October with DeGeneres to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, Ulta CEO Mary Dillon appeared on the popular talk show and presented the host with a $2 million check made out to the Breast Cancer Reseach Foundation.

    There has been a bit of controversy lately regarding Urban Outfitters' recent request that some of their salaried employees “volunteer” to fill normally hourly roles in fulfillment centers and retail outlets. The labor community and their activist friends have been crying foul over what they perceive is the manipulation of salaried junior managers by forcing them to work “hourly” jobs and getting no additional pay or benefits.
