  • Former P&G vice chair joins BCG as senior adviser

    The Boston Consulting Group has named former P&G vice chairman Dimitri Panayotopoulos as a senior adviser in its consumer practice.

    In his 37 years at P&G, Panayotopoulos was a cornerstone of the company’s global success and earned a reputation for relentlessly pushing boundaries. As vice chair global business units and more recently the adviser to the chairman and CEO, Panayotopoulos helped the company focus on breakthrough ideas, speed to market and large-scale transformation across all businesses.

  • American Eagle to close 150 stores

    Pittsburgh - Following a comprehensive fleet review, American Eagle Outfitters Inc. has identified 150 stores to close in North America during the next three years, including nearly 100 AE stores. For 2014, the company is planning to close approximately 50 AE and 20 aerie stores in North America.

  • eBay database breached by cyberattackers

    eBay will be asking its users to change their passwords thanks to a cyberattack that compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data.

  • Tiffany shines in first quarter

    Tiffany chairman and CEO Michael J. Kowalsk said the company enjoyed “an excellent and encouraging start to the year.”

    The company grew net earnings 50% in the first quarter. Net earnings increased 50% to $126 million, up from $84 million in the same period a year earlier, aided by the elimination of pre-tax charges relating to staff and occupancy reduction.

    Worldwide net sales grew 13% to $1.01 billion, from $895.48 million. Worldwide same-store sales rose 11% due to growth in most regions.

  • Michaels solid in first quarter

    While many retailers were still reeling from a prolonged winter that hurt their first quarter results, Michaels saw solid results in its first quarter, posting increases in both net and comparable-store sales.

  • EBay asks users to change passwords after breach

    San Jose, Calif. - EBay Inc. is asking EBay users to change their passwords because of a cyberattack that compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data. After conducting extensive tests on its networks, the company said it has no evidence of the compromise resulting in unauthorized activity for EBay users, and no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats.

  • Falling sales cause Staples earnings to tumble

    Framingham, Mass. – Staples Inc. attributed a 44% drop in net earnings during the first quarter of fiscal 2014 to lower sales caused by store closures and a rise in the value of the dollar. Net earnings of $96 million were 44% below net earnings of $170 million reported a year earlier.

  • Stage Stores widens net loss in Q1

    Houston – Stage Stores Inc. reported a net loss of $18.79 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, up from a net loss from $6.86 million in the same period a year earlier. Net sales slightly declined to $372.04 million from $372.1 million, while same-store sales decreased 0.2%.
