  • Brown Shoe Company to change name, add men’s line

    St. Louis -- One of St. Louis’ oldest public companies and one of the nation’s most diverse footwear companies, Brown Shoe Company, is putting a new foot forward and changing its name to “Caleres,” a Latin word that means “passionate, to glow.” The Brown name, however, will live on in a new men’s footwear business called Brown Shoe Bootmakers that the company plans to launch in 2016.

  • Lowe’s CEO pay drops 24%

    Mooresville, N.C. – Reduced stock awards and incentives resulted in a roughly 24% pay cut for Robert Niblock, president, chairman and CEO of Lowe’s Companies Inc., in 2014. In an SEC filing, Lowe’s reported that Niblock’s total compensation in 2014 came to $14.3 million, compared to $18.7 million in 2013.
      Niblock’s base salary grew 5% to $1.3 million from $1.2 million. However, Niblock’s stock awards fell to $5.8 million from $9.8 million, and other incentives decreased, as well.
  • Target, MasterCard reach $19 million breach settlement

    Minneapolis – Target Corp. has entered into a settlement agreement with MasterCard International Inc.to resolve losses from the data breach that Target experienced during the fourth quarter of 2013. Under the agreement, alternative recovery offers will be made by MasterCard to eligible MasterCard issuers worldwide that claimed to have been affected by the data breach.

  • Giant and Martin’s Food Stores to raise wages

    Carlisle, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets said they will begin paying all non-union workers a minimum of $9 a hour beginning in June.

    The operator of 200 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia said the move was part of the company’s commitment to provide competitive wages.

    "Our associates are the foundation of our success, and we have always believed in paying competitive wages to attract the best talent," said Tom Lenkevich, Giant/Martin’s president.

  • Retailers’ energy efforts honored by EPA

    Some of the biggest names in retail soon will be honored in the nation’s capital when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy host an annual event to recognize Energy Star Partners of the Year.

    Among this year’s award recipients are Home Depot, Sears, Best Buy, Kroger, Kohl’s, Food Lion, Staples and JCPenney. The eight retailers are among 128 total companies being honored as Energy Star Partners of the Year from the roughly 16,000 companies who partner with EPA on the broad-based energy efficiency program.
