RILA supports data security bill

4/15/2015

Washington, D.C. - The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is publicly supporting the Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 2015.

In advance of the Energy and Commerce Committee’s markup of the bill, RILA released a statement saying retail and grocery industries have long been in support of a federal data breach notification and data security law that sets a single national standard.

“We commend Chairman Burgess, vice chairman Blackburn, and Rep. Welch for their diligent effort in crafting a bipartisan commonsense bill,” said the statement. “While we would like to see several changes made to the bill during markup, namely tightening definitions of what constitutes a data breach, reasonable caps on penalties, and setting a reasonable affirmative notification trigger, the Retail Industry Leaders Association and the Food Marketing Institute support the Energy and Commerce Committee moving forward with markup to produce a good bill that protects American consumers and provides clear rules of the road for American businesses.”
