  • McMillon, McKenna and Murray headline CRE event

    The Walmart shareholders meeting is next week and while the event is great for the retailer’s associates, suppliers looking for deeper insight into new priorities and key initiatives will be better served by attending a more content rich event the following week.

    That’s when the Center for Retailing Excellence in the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas plans to hold its annual Emerging Trends in Retail conference. The event, scheduled for Thursday, June 11, is especially noteworthy for several reasons this year.

  • Home Depot hosts hurricane workshops May 30

    Atlanta - The Home Depot Inc. will host its third annual Hurricane Preparedness Workshops on May 30. The one-day event, held in nearly 700 stores from the Gulf Coast to New England, will help prepare residents in storm-prone regions ahead of hurricane season, which begins June 1.

    The free workshops will be held 10-11:30 a.m. local time and cover storm readiness topics including understanding hurricane alerts and categories, creating a storm survival kit, choosing a generator, weathering a hurricane safely and repairing a home after a storm has passed.

  • Home Depot wants shoppers to be storm-ready

    With hurricane season fast approaching, the Home Depot wants to encourage residents to shop its stores for storm-related gear by hosting nearly 700 storm workshops on May 30 from Texas to Maine.

  • Walmart, Tracy Morgan reach settlement over N.J. Turnpike accident

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Walmart and the attorney for comedian/actor Tracy Morgan have reached a settlement agreement, ending a civil lawsuit related to a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike last June. The terms and conditions of the settlement with Morgan and the other plaintiffs remain confidential.

    Walmart and the attorney for comedian Tracy Morgan reached a confidential settlement agreement of a lawsuit stemming from an accident involving a Walmart truck and the vehicle in which Morgan was riding.

    Walmart and Benedict P. Morelli, attorney for Tracy Morgan, Ardley Fuqua, and Jeffrey Millea reached a settlement agreement ending the lawsuit against Walmart that arose from a multi-vehicle accident involving the men on June 7, 2014, on the New Jersey Turnpike.

  • Brown Shoe posts strong Q1; embarks on major rebranding, new name

    St. Louis -- Brown Shoe Co., which will soon change its name to Caleres, reported a strong first quarter, with net earnings rising 24.8% to $19.3 million amid better-than-expected same-store sales and strong margins.

    Net revenue rose 1.9% to $602.3 million from $591 million in the year ago period. Same-store sales rose 3.1%.

    Gross margin of 41.3% was up approximately 30 basis points year-over-year, while operating margin of 5.0% was up approximately 10 basis points.
