Amazon continues making big steps into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services platform of Amazon, is making its new generative AI model called Bedrock widely available. Based on machine learning (ML), generative AI can create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos, and music.

While Bedrock is not based on the leading-edge ChatGPT AI platform, it provides the same type of leading-edge, human-type capabilities ChatGPT offers. Initially released in limited preview in April 2023, Bedrock is based on proprietary foundational models (FMs), which are very large ML models pre-trained on vast amounts of data, and accessible to developers via an API.

Initially released in limited preview in April 2023, Bedrock’s general availability comes with several new features. These include the new general availability of the high-power Amazon Titan Embeddings model and the accessibility of Meta’s Llama 2 model 2 via an API.

In addition, AWS will soon release a preview for Amazon CodeWhisperer, an AI-powered coding companion that securely customizes CodeWhisperer’s code suggestions based on an organization’s own internal codebase.

And in an effort to increase the productivity of business analysts, AWS is releasing a preview of Generative Business Intelligence (BI) authoring capabilities for Amazon QuickSight, a unified BI service built for the cloud. This will enable users to create visuals, format charts, perform calculations, and perform other tasks by describing what they want in natural language.

Other recent moves Amazon has made to increase its presence in the AI space include entering a strategic collaboration with San Francisco-based generative AI developer Anthropic that includes investing up to $4 billion in the company and taking a minority ownership position.

“Over the last year, the proliferation of data, access to scalable compute, and advancements in machine learning (ML) have led to a surge of interest in generative AI, sparking new ideas that could transform entire industries and reimagine how work gets done,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of data and AI at AWS. “With enterprise-grade security and privacy, a choice of leading FMs, a data-first approach, and our high-performance, cost-effective infrastructure, organizations trust AWS to power their businesses with generative AI solutions at every layer of the stack.

"Today’s announcement is a major milestone that puts generative AI at the fingertips of every business, from startups to enterprises, and every employee, from developers to data analysts," said Sivasubramanian. "With powerful, new innovations, AWS is bringing greater security, choice, and performance to customers, while also helping them to tightly align their data strategy across their organization, so they can make the most of the transformative potential of generative AI.”
