Amazon plans $40 billion investment in Spain data centers
Amazon is making a major commitment to expanding and supporting its data center infrastructure in Spain.
The online giant announced it will invest $39.8 billion in Spain to help deliver advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities across Europe. This new commitment adds roughly $21.7 billion to an existing investment in Spain data infrastructure Amazon announced in 2024. The capital will be allocated to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Europe (Spain) Region, located in Aragon, Spain.
AWS Regions consist of Availability Zones that place infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations. Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling and physical security and is connected through redundant, ultra-low-latency networks.
AWS customers can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve greater fault tolerance. The company says that Availability Zones are located far enough from each other to support customers’ business continuity, but near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that use multiple Availability Zones.
Amazon is also planning to build supply chain facilities in Aragón that will directly support its data center operations across Spain and Europe. The project will include a server manufacturing plant to complete assembly and testing, a manufacturing fulfillment warehouse, and a dedicated AI and machine learning server manufacturing and repair facility.
The company estimates the data centers will support an estimated 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses. Of these, 6,700 are full-time jobs from Amazon's direct investment across multiple categories, including data center operations staff and employees of Amazon’s suppliers such as construction workers building the facilities and data center security personnel.
When fully operational, Amazon also expects its new supply chain facilities to create approximately 1,800 jobs in Aragón. Amazon launched the AWS Europe (Spain) Region in Aragón in November 2022.
The company has also committed billions of dollars to data infrastructure development projects across the globe, most recently with the allocation of approximately $4.4 billion to support the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of data centers in New Zealand.

As part of this investment, AWS is launching the AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region. Meanwhile, in Australia. AWS has plans for 10 more Availability Zones and three more AWS Regions in Chile, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
"As Amazon marks 15 years in Spain, this new infrastructure investment reinforces our long-term commitment and will be pivotal for the country’s digital and economic future," said David Zapolsky, Amazon chief global affairs and legal officer.
