Wegmans Food Markets is modernizing its supply chain infrastructure.

The regional East Coast grocer has announced it will invest $110 million in its supply chain network in an effort to improve the work experience for employees, enhance service to stores, increase capacity and support the company’s long-term growth.

As part of the plan, Wegmans will open a new, state-of-the-art refrigerated facility in Rochester, N.Y., to support perishable operations, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli and restaurant foods. Wegmans will also move return center operations from their current Rochester location to a new, modernized building also located in Rochester.

Under the plan, the company will consolidate its Rochester general merchandise distribution center to its Pottsville, Penn. facility. Wegmans says its Rochester general merchandise location is its oldest leased distribution facility and will not meet future service needs. The consolidation is expected to occur in spring 2027.

According to Wegmans, these facilities will offer an improved work environment, add capacity to serve stores, and create opportunities for its distribution employees while also strengthening its supply chain, reducing reliance on third-party providers, and providing future capacity. Planning is underway, with construction and opening timelines not yet finalized.

“Rochester is our hometown and an important part of who we are as a company," said Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets. "By continuing to invest in our stores and facilities here, we’re strengthening our operations, creating long-term opportunities for our people, and ensuring Wegmans continues to grow in the community we’re proud to call home.”

According to Wegmans, there will be no layoffs related to these changes. The company will work with affected employees throughout the transition and will share additional information as plans and timelines are finalized.

“Modernizing our network is essential to continuing to build a safe, more efficient, and more resilient supply chain," said Brian Olney, senior VP of supply chain & food safety, Wegmans. "These investments will give our people the tools and facilities they need to better serve our stores today while creating the capacity to support Wegmans’ continued growth for years to come.”

Based in Rochester, N.Y., Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a family-owned regional supermarket chain with 114 stores located along the East Coast.
