Wayfair creates shoppable home images with generative AI

Wayfair Decorify
Decorify is a generative AI room planning tool from Wayfair.

Wayfair is leveraging next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology to let customers view and purchase items in a virtual home space.

The digitally native home furnishings giant is piloting Decorify, a solution that uses a generative AI model to create shoppable, photorealistic images of products. Generative AI, which is based on machine learning (ML), can create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos, and music.

Utilizing Decorify, Customers can upload an image of their own space and prompt the system to redesign it in any different style of their choosing. Shoppers can then browse various room designs and products and make purchases from Wayfair directly from the images. Decorify enables customers to upload unlimited photos and delete them at any time and shop across a wide selection of the Wayfair catalog directly from their reimagined virtual rooms. Ther solution is accessible via mobile or desktop via browser.

Anything we develop or deploy for our customers, including GenAI, must support our mission to help everyone, anywhere create their feeling of home," said Wayfair CTO Fiona Tan (Editor’s note: Fiona Tan was recently named a Woman of the Year in the CSA Retail’s Top Women Awards). "Viewing generative AI through this pragmatic lens enables us to prioritize where and when we deploy development resources and ensure applications like Decorify delight our customers."

"Leveraging generative AI technologies, Decorify creates a discovery experience that provides endless inspiration and powers the home personalization journey," said Shrenik Sadalgi, director of research and development at Wayfair. "Decorify is the latest example from Wayfair Next of how we use visual inspiration, such as 3D, Spatial Computing and now generative AI, to create unique, novel and functional customer experiences.”
