Walmart launches new digital and metaverse offerings

Walmart is promoting back-to-school products on Roblox.

Walmart is introducing an array of online customer features including a recipe hub, rotisserie chicken delivery, and a back-to-school Roblox experience.

In an email to Chain Store Age, a Walmart spokesperson outlined three new omnichannel services it is providing customers:

  • Chicken delivery. The retailer is now delivering rotisserie chickens to customers nationwide, available in original and lemon pepper flavor, through its online delivery service. Customers can log into the Walmart app or e-commerce site to select how, when, and where they want their chicken (and other items) delivered.  
  • Digital recipe hub. Shoppers can gain access to a collection of recipes for a variety of occassions, all in one place here. With one click, customers can add all the ingredients to their cart for pickup or delivery. 
  • Value meals and rollbacks. Walmart has lowered prices on popular items, now through Oct. 15, 2023. Walmart is also offering family meals solutions coupled with curated shopping lists for less than $6. Options include grilled avocado salad and salsa poached eggs and can be found here.

Walmart expands Roblox presence with back-to-school promotion

The discounter is also highlighting its back-to-school product assortment with a new metaverse experience, Supercampus. This gamified environment on the Roblox immersive virtual gaming platform offers puzzles and other challenges. Players age 13 and up an choose to collaborate or compete with others.

The game is played with back-to-school brands and supplies carried by Walmart, including BIC Highlighters, Crayola crayons and 3M’s Post-it Notes.  Walmart initially debuted in the metaverse by launching two new Roblox metaverse experiences in September 2022.

Called Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play, the spaces offer original interactive content and entertainment. Walmart Land offers fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items directly to Roblox users, while Walmart’s Universe of Play provides a virtual toy destination in Roblox.

“Walmart has always aimed to create engaging experiences for our customers and members; now, we’re continuing to explore how to do that in the virtual worlds where they are spending more of their time.,” Walmart said in a corporate blog post. “We’re proud to have created a one-of-a-kind virtual journey where players can showcase their talents and uncover hidden skills, perfectly timed for the back-to-school season.”

Based in Bentonville, Ark., Walmart operates more than 10,500 stores and clubs under 46 banners in 24 countries and e-commerce websites.
