These five retail brands account for 13% of Spirit Halloween locations…
Spirit Halloween is leading the charge of reviving vacant spaces and transforming them into profitable, seasonal pop-up locations.
A wave of closures from traditional retailers has opened up new opportunities for pop-up retailers such as Spirit Halloween to strategically use short-term leases, according to global location intelligence provider Dataplor. The “one-stop destination” for all things Halloween opened a record-breaking 1,525 locations this year in the United States and Canada this year.
Dataplor analyzed the data behind Spirit Halloween's location strategy and found that five retailers — Bed Bath & Beyond, Rite Aid, Tuesday Morning, Sears and CVS — accounted for approximately 13% of Spirit’s locations. (See chart near end end article.)
“Our analysis shows that vacancy rates in retail spaces are creating unique opportunities for pop-up stores,” said Geoff Michener, CEO and founder of Dataplor. “Spirit Halloween’s success reflects a broader economic trend where temporary, flexible retail models are thriving amid store closures.”
Closures from well-known retailers, including Bed Bath & Beyond and Rite Aid, have created prime opportunities for businesses like Spirit Halloween to occupy high-visibility, high-traffic spaces, Dataplor said.
According to Dataplor’s analysis, the top five former tenants of Spirit Halloween locations in 2024 include:
•Bed Bath & Beyond: 77 locations
•Rite Aid: 66 locations
•Tuesday Morning: 59 locations
•Sears: 54 locations
•CVS: 39 locations
Looking past Halloween
For the first time ever, Spencer Gifts, the parent company of Spirit Halloween, is testing a seasonal Christmas concept. Spirit Halloween will open 10 “Spirit Christmas” stores, starting with a location in Mays Landing, N.J. on Oct. 18. The 10 stores will all be on the East Coast.
Dataplor said that its research indicates that the rise of pop-up stores like Spirit Halloween could mark a shift away from traditional brick-and-mortar models. For more information, read the full report on the dataplor blog.
