  • GE Lighting rolls out new lighting program at 7,000 Walgreens

    East Cleveland, Ohio -- Walgreens recently upgraded its general lighting across 80% of the chain's nationwide locations, through a partnership with GE Lighting.

    As part of its new lighting initiative, Walgreens said it has changed its lights to the new GE F25 T8 linear fluorescent tubes, which is designed to save thousands of dollars as it impacts more than 4.3 million lights at nearly 7,000 stores. Additionally, the new linear fluorescent fixtures from GE Lighting are expected to increase energy efficiency by 9% and extend re-lamp cycles by 10%.

  • Visionworks to open 17 stores in Philadelphia market by end of 2012

    Philadelphia -- Visionworks, the largest wholly owned U.S.-based optical retailer, has opened its first store in the Philadelphia area. Located in Deptford Township, N.J., it is the first of more than 25 stores expected to open in the market through 2013.

    The San Antonio-based retailer plans to open 17 stores before the end of 2012 and additional locations by April 2013.

  • Largest solar array in Virginia now plugged-in atop Ikea

    Woodbridge, Va. -- Ikea officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed atop its store in Woodbridge, Va. The state’s largest such photovoltaic array, the 63,000-sq.-ft. PV installation consists of a 504-kW system, built with 2,100 panels.

    The system will produce approximately 636,199 kWh of clean electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing 439 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), eliminating the emissions of 86 cars or powering 55 homes yearly.

  • Office Depot honored as Energy Star Leader for 2012

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot announced that it has been named to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of 2012 Energy Star Leaders for Leadership in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Office Depot’s significant energy reduction makes the retailer the first ever retailer in the United States to be recognized for a 30% or greater improvement.

  • Bi-Lo installing energy-saving doors on open cases

    New York -- Supermarket operator Bi-Lo has installed insulated glass doors to previously open Hussman cases in three Bi-Lo stores in Tennesse. The retro-fit doors, RemiSafe, are from Remis America, a joint venture between, DEHCO, Inc., Elkhart, Ind., and Remis GmbH of Cologne, Germany. 

  • Duane Reade opens second ‘up market’ concept in Manhattan’s Financial District

    New York -- Drugstore retailer Duane Reade, a division of Walgreens, is expanding its Manhattan footprint with a second distinct location in the city’s Financial District. The new, 22,000-sq.-ft. store boasts a number of amenities, and—in a first for a U.S. drug store—also features a museum-quality exhibit that pays tribute to the neighborhood and hallowed grounds of downtown Manhattan. 

  • Ikea goes solar in Houston; installation makes chain largest solar owner in Texas

    Houston -- Ikea on Monday officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its store in Houston. The installation, when combined with Ikea solar projects atop stores in Frisco and Round Rock, will make the home furnishings retailer the state’s largest solar owner.
