New York City -- Retailers across the nation issued updates on their environmental initiatives in the days leading up to Earth Day, April 22. Starbucks Coffee Co. released its tenth annual "Global Responsibility Report," noting it has reduced water use, increased its renewable energy purchases and is testing a new energy management story (see story here).
Wal-Mart Stores detailed its environmental progress in its “2011 Global Responsibility Report.’ The discounter said it has made steady year-to-year improvement towards its goals of creating zero waste, using 100% renewable energy (see story here). Macy’s celebrated Earth Day by announcing several green initiatives, including the news it is switching to eco-friendly hangers for all apparel and increasing its use of solar power (see story here).
Other retailers making green news this week included Kroger Southwest, PetSmart and Office Depot.
