Store Expansion News: October update

Retailers and restaurants alike made headlines in October with store expansions and new formats. 

Here are the major stories as reported by CSA, starting with the most recent.

  • Zaxbys expands East Coast presence The Atlanta-based fried chicken chain announced planned growth in three states during October. Zaxbys will open its first stores in Maryland and New Jersey in 2025, and has signed an agreement to open 10 locations in Philadelphia over the next five years.
  • Paymore hits 50 locations with hundreds of stores in development The buy-sell-trade electronics franchise opened its 50th location in Dublin, Calif., outside of San Francisco. Paymore has signed approximately 450 franchise units over the past two years, and has opened 30 new stores in 2024 so far. The retailer expects to open 15 more locations by the end of the year.
  • 7-Eleven to build 500 "food forward" stores The convenience store giant said it plans to build 500 convenience stores between 2025 and 2027, with 125 scheduled to open next year. The new 7-Eleven stores will be larger and “food forward,” and feature digital innovations, frictionless shopping and fuel.
  • On continues U.S. expansion The Swiss apparel and footwear brand added two flagship stores to its U.S. fleet in October. On opened its third New York City outpost, a 4,596-sq.-ft. flagship in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood, as well as a 4,553-sq.-ft. store on Chicago’s Near North Side.

  • Nordstrom Rack adds to 2025 openings Nordstrom Rack has added new stores in Florida to its development pipeline. The retailer will open a 24,000-sq.-ft. store in fall 2025 at The Avenue Viera in Melbourne, as well as a 27,000-sq.-ft. Nordstrom Rack at Sarasota Pavilion in Sarasota, which will open spring 2026.
  • Bed Bath & Beyond to make physical store return Home décor retailer Kirkland’s has entered into a deal that will result in the return of Bed Bath & Beyond brick-and-mortar stores to the U.S. retail landscape. The company is planning to open its first neighborhood Bed Bath & Beyond stores in 2025, with an initial pilot up to five stores.
  • REI announces 2025 openings, gives glimpse of 2026 The specialty outdoor retailer will open stores in Washington, California, Colorado and New York next year. In 2026, REI announced that it will bring new locations to Prosper, Texas and St. George, Utah.
  • Ulta to open 400 new stores The beauty retailer is planning to open hundreds of new stores over the next several years. Ulta’s 400 new stores will help it reach a total goal of more than 1,800 locations.
  • H&M opens Manhattan pop-up, plans new openings The Swedish apparel retailer’s newest pop-up store is located in Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood, and will be open from Oct. 24 to Dec. 29. H&M also announced new fall openings, which includes stores in Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and Montreal.
  • Biggby signs first multi-unit deal The Michigan-based coffee chain signed its first-ever multi-unit agreement in October that will bring three locations to North Carolina and South Carolina. Previously, Biggby had only ever signed single-unit deals.
  • Yesway continues Southwest expansion The convenience chain is expanding its Allsup’s banner in New Mexico, with six stores set to open by the end of the year. The large-format stores will span 6,277 sq. ft. and operate 24 hours daily.
