Report: Facebook scam hits Market Basket customers

Fraudsters are reportedly trying to obtain personal information from Market Basket shoppers via fake Facebook messages.

According to Boston.com, the New England grocery chain is warning customers about a phony Facebook account using its name which is sending friend requests and asking for people to submit personal information in order to participate in a promotional contest. Market Basket’s real Facebook page never sends friend requests and never asks for any payment-related information.

“It has come to our attention that a newly created and unauthorized Facebook profile is using our name and logo to contact our customers by posing as our official page,” Market Basket said in a post on its corporate Facebook page. “The safety and privacy of our customers is very important to us and we are working diligently to address this concern.”

Based in Tewksbury, Mass., Market Basket operates 84 stores in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
