REI Co-op continues to expand its footprint.

The specialty outdoor retailer will open its first Kentucky store later this year in Louisville. Located at the Paddocks Shops shopping center, the 31,100-sq.-ft. store will feature a wide assortment of outdoor gear and apparel for camping, cycling, hiking, running, fitness, climbing and more.

The store will also have a full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics. It will also offer buy online-pickup in store and curbside pickup options for added convenience.

The new location is slated to open as REI continues to grow.  Earlier this year, the retailer opened its 10th Colorado location, adding to the list of planned 2024 openings, which includes stores in New York, Arizona, Oregon, California and Oklahoma. For 2025, REI has announced two store openings so far: Durango, Col. (spring) and St. George, Utah (fall).

"We have been interested in Louisville for nearly a decade," said Lindsay Struve, REI regional director. "Even prior to announcing our new store, more than 29,000 REI members from the community have connected with the co-op for their outdoor adventures through our online resources and stores in adjacent states. As we open our doors, we are also excited to develop lasting partnerships with local nonprofits to support their efforts to welcome more people outside."

Despite no REI stores in Kentucky, the retailer said it has a co-op membership of 29,600 in Louisville and 78,600 in Kentucky. Members who join the co-op enjoy benefits including a used gear trade-in program, discounts on shop services and experiences, a share of the co-op's annual profits based on qualifying purchases and more.

Headquartered in Kent, Wash., REI has 24 million members nationwide, and operates approximately 185 stores.
