  • RILA report details retailers’ ongoing progress in sustainability

    Arlington, Va. -- Sustainability teams in retail companies are growing, and reporting levels are gaining seniority, according to a new survey by the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

    The report, RILA’s second Retail Sustainability Report, was done in sponsorship with Ernst & Young, The survey uncovered six significant trends, specifically that:

    1. Sustainability teams are growing. Most companies surveyed have full-time sustainability teams. Teams are growing, and reporting levels are gaining seniority.

  • Report: J.C. Penney lays off 2,200 store and office associates

    New York -- The ax has fallen — again — at J.C. Penney Co. The retailer laid off approximately 2,200 employees in its stores and district offices on Wednesday, The Dallas Morning News reported.

    The majority of the staff cuts occurred in some 100 stores that had significant sales declines last year, spokeswoman Daphne Avilla said in the report, with Penney adjusting the employee count to match each store’s new level of business.

  • Whole Foods, OfficeMax, Target among most ethical companies

    New York -- Award results released Wednesday by international think-tank Ethisphere Institute listed Whole Foods, OfficeMax and Target among the World’ Most Ethical Companies.

    The institute reviewed nominations from companies in more than 100 countries and 36 industries. Selection is based on a review of codes of ethics; evaluating the investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looking at activities designed to improve corporate citizenship; and studying nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers.

  • Expert: Ongoing trial could seriously tarnish Martha Stewart brand

    Dallas -- The current trial involving Martha Stewart, J.C. Penney Co. and Macy's could seriously damage the value of the Martha Stewart brand, according to litigation media relations and crisis management expert David Margulies, president of Marguilies Communications Group.

    "Even if the court rules in her favor the perception will be that Stewart stabbed a longtime loyal business partner in the back,” he said. “The public looks at legal issues from a point of fairness rather than from the specific legal issues involved.”

  • Study: Nordstrom is nation’s favorite fashion retailer; Dick’s tops for sports apparel

    Boulder, Col. -- Nordstrom is the nation’s favorite fashion retail chain, according to an annual consumer study conducted by customer intelligence solutions provider Market Force Information. The upscale department store edged out Kohl’s, which had ranked first in the three previous studies. This year, Kohl’s moved to the No. 2 spot overall, followed by Macy’s, Dillard’s and J.C. Penney.
     

  • Target and Fast Company launch mobile competition

    New York -- Fast Company magazine and Target are sponsoring a competition, the Target Retail Accelerator, that will award $75,000 to a developer who creates the best new mobile app or mobile website for the retailer.  

    Fast Company will chronicle the developers' efforts on the website of its new technology vertical Co.Labs.

  • NRF backs legislation to repeal health care employer mandate

    Washington -- The National Retail Federation this week welcomed introduction of House and Senate legislation that would repeal the employer mandate provision of the health care reform law scheduled to take effect next year.

  • Supervalu announces divisional leadership changes

    Minneapolis -- Supervalu announced Monday that it will make sweeping changes among its executive ranks as part of a previously announced right-sizing program.

    Newly minted president and CEO Sam Duncan has named former Kroger VP Mark Van Buskirk as EVP merchandising and marketing for Supervalu, charged with oversight of retail merchandising and marketing.

    Former Albertsons executive Rob Woseth has been named EVP chief strategy officer, overseeing real estate and corporate development, as well as strategic growth opportunities.
