  • Dick’s faces new golf competitor

    ROSWELL, Ga. — Dick’s Sporting Goods is looking at increased competition in its core Northeastern markets as PGA Tour Superstore prepares for the grand opening of its first retail location in Paramus, N.J.

    The 57,000-sq.-ft. store will open its doors Wed., Nov. 21, and offer a wide selection of golf merchandise and apparel, including more than 15,000 golf clubs and 10,000 pairs of shoes for every level of golf and tennis enthusiast.

  • Mattel names CEO Bryan G. Stockton chairman

    EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Mattel’s board of directors has named CEO Bryan G. Stockton, 59, as chairman of the board, effective Jan. 1, 2013. The current chairman, Robert A. Eckert, 58, informed the board of his decision to retire from his service as director and chairman of the board, effective Dec. 31. Stockton will continue to function as CEO, a position he’s held since Jan. 2012.

    A 2.7% third quarter same store sales increase at Sam’s Club was below expectations for a 3% to 5% increase. President and CEO Rosalind Brewer explained what went wrong yesterday morning during a pre-recorded message.

  • Shareholder Starboard asks Office Depot to revoke poison pill

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- In a letter to Office Depot Inc., activist investor Starboard Value asked the office supply retailer to immediately revoke its poison pill provision on the grounds that it would limit the influence of shareholders.

    Starboard, Office Depot’s largest shareholder with a 14.8% stake, wrote that it believes “the implementation of the poison pill, with a threshold just above our current ownership, is designed specifically to entrench the current board.”

     

  • Casual Male Retail Group repeats loss in Q3; speeds up opening of DXL stores

    Canton, Mass. -- Casual Male Retail Group reported Friday a loss of $1.6 million in the third quarter, flat with the prior year’s third quarter.

    Sales dipped slightly to $88.7 million from $89 million, and same-store sales inched up 1.5%. However, same-store sales for Destination XL rose 13.8% in the quarter.

    CINCINNATI — P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program has won the 2012 Economist Social Innovation Award.

    “As a Company, we are both honored by the recognition and inspired by our employees and global partners who have worked to deliver more than 5 billion liters of clean drinking water to families in developing countries, helping save nearly 30,000 lives,” said P&G CEO, president and chairman of the board, Bob McDonald.

  • Duke gives Obama and Congress fiscal cliff deadline

    For a split second after the presidential election the victor and the vanquished struck a conciliatory tone on finding the balance between raising taxes and cutting spending. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. president and CEO Mike Duke wants the issue resolved as soon as possible.

    Duke was among a group of business leaders in Washington earlier this week meeting with President Barack Obama and following the meeting Walmart released a statement expressing his views on the issue.
