  • Amazon debuts Prime Music service

    Seattle — Amazon.com has debuted a new feature for members of its Prime paid benefits program called Prime Music. The service provides ad-free access to more than one million songs and hundreds of expert-programmed Prime Playlists.

  • DDR and Blackstone to acquire 76 shopping centers for $1.975 billion

    Beachwood, Ohio — DDR Corp. and an affiliate of Blackstone Real Estate Partners VII have announced the formation of a third joint venture to acquire 76 shopping centers currently owned by American Realty Capital Properties, Inc.

    The joint venture will acquire the portfolio in a transaction valued at $1.975 billion, including assumed debt of $461 million and approximately $800 million of new financings.  

  • Vera Bradley taps new marketing chief

    Vera Bradley has named Angel Ilagan as EVP, chief marketing officer, effective July 21.

    Since 2010, Ilagan has served as marketing chief and VP of marketing in the Americas for Pandora Jewelry, where he oversees consumer advertising, promotions, marketing research, public relations, co-op advertising, Web management, customer relationship management (CRM) and social media management. His additional global responsibilities at Pandora include branding, strategic marketing and e-commerce content.

  • Neiman Marcus swings to loss in 3Q

    Dallas — Neiman Marcus saw adjusted profits slip in the third quarter, even as revenues and comps rose.

    For the quarter ended May 3, the company reported a net loss of $2.7 million, compared with net income of $70.8 million in the year-ago period.  On an adjusted basis, however, the company reported earnings of $45.1 million compared with $78.7 million last year.

    Also in the quarter, the company reported total revenues of $1.16 billion, up from $1.10 billion in the year-ago period. Same-store sales rose 5.9%.

     

  • Lands' End finds a lot to like after Sears split

    Newly separated from Sears Holdings, Lands' End reported respectable sales growth during a first quarter that saw it vow to become a global lifestyle brand.

    Lands' End completed its separation from Sears on April 4 and for the quarter ended May 2 said its sales increased 3.6% to $330.5 million, driven by a 4.8% increase in the direct segment offset by a 2.3% decrease in the retail segment. Profits increased 48.1% to $10.9 million, or 34 cents a share, compared to $7.3 million, or 23 cents a year the prior year.

  • Retail sales continue rebound with 0.3% rise in May

    Washington, D.C. — Consumer spending rose 0.3% in May, marking four consecutive months of rising U.S. retail sales.

    The Commerce Department reported Thursday that May results were boosted by strength from the auto sector, which recorded a 1.4% sales increase during the month. U.S. retail sales rose 0.5% in April and 1.5% in March.

  • PayPal launches small business tool

    San Jose, Calif. — PayPal has launched PassPort, a website designed to provide small businesses with free tools to expand their global sales. PassPort provides country-specific guidance on seasonal sales peaks; shipping and distribution logistics; currency exchange and fees; and customs procedures and taxes.

    In addition to holiday-specific content, PassPort presents buying and selling patterns around the globe and across key corridors. PassPort helps businesses start selling internationally quickly via direct links to eBay Marketplace tools.
