  • Smart & Final expands California footprint with store purchase

    It’s official: Smart & Final Stores is acquiring 32 Haggen stores in Central and Southern California.

    Smart & Final has been approved by the United States Bankruptcy Court to purchase 32 store leases – four of which are supplemental to the chain’s previously announced stalking-horse bid –from affiliates of Haggen Holdings for a total cash purchase price of approximately $68 million. Smart & Final plans to convert the 32 stores to its Extra! Store format.

  • Olive Garden brings digital to the table

    Olive Garden is adding a new omnichannel twist to its traditional Italian dining experience.

    The casual dining chain has completed rollout of Ziosk tabletop tablets at more than 800 restaurants nationwide. Ziosk's seven-inch touchscreen tablets allow Olive Garden customers to browse the menu, order drinks, appetizers and desserts, and pay checks. The tablets also feature interactive activities such as trivia games.

  • Retail forecast 2016

    How will retailers fare in 2016? Very well, according to experienced market watchers.

    “We expect core retail sales to grow 5.3% in 2016,” says Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics for Moody’s Analytics, a research firm based in West Chester, Pa. (Core retail sales exclude volatile revenues from auto sales and gas stations.)

    That is notably faster than the 4.2% rate anticipated when 2015 sales are finally tallied. The 2015 experience was, again, slightly better than that the 3.9% growth of 2014.

  • Amazon gives sneak peek of drone delivery

    In a new video, Amazon.com is previewing what it calls the future of retail.

    Amazon demonstrates a new drone model which will allow delivery of certain items within 30 minutes or less. The drone rises vertically like a helicopter to an altitude of almost 400 feet, and then can fly like a plane for a distance of about 15 miles.

  • Mashable, Visa mix it up for e-commerce

    Digital media company Mashable and Visa are doing a little mashing of their own to launch a new online retail entity.

    The two companies have launched the Mashable Shop, an e-commerce storefront accessible via the Mashable media site. Mashable Shop offers both original apparel and accessories, as well curated technology products and select merchandise from Williams-Sonoma. The Visa Checkout online payment service will be the exclusive form of payment.

  • Cyber Monday looks strong out of the gate

    Early indicators point to retailers having an historically strong Cyber Monday.

    According to the Adobe Digital Index, as of 10 a.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 30, Cyber Monday online sales had already reached $490 million. Considering Cyber Monday online sales in 2014 reached a total of around $2 billion, and early Cyber Monday sales were tracking ahead of the prior year by 14%, this is a very possible start to a record-breaking day.
