Week-over-week sales up 0.9%
New York City ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate reported that year-over-year retail sales increased 2.4% for the week ending March 13, while sales rose a slight 0.9% versus the previous week ending March 6.
The more favorable, seasonal weather throughout most of the country encouraged consumers to shop for warm weather items last week, driving sales and traffic versus both last year and last week. ShopperTrak reports this is the second consecutive week NRSE sales have posted an increase, allowing March sales to post a 2.1% increase over the same time last year.
“Weather was really the story last week as Spring-like conditions finally surfaced and prompted folks to buy some warm weather apparel and to visit malls, retail outlets and lifestyle centers to spend time shopping,” said Bill Martin, co-founder of ShopperTrak. “With many students on spring break over the next few weeks, this spending trend could continue as recreational shopping rises and consumers have more free time to shop.”
