Target car falls short in Sprint Showdown

5/23/2012

Juan Pablo Montoya and the Target team fell short of claiming a spot in the Sprint All-Star race at the Sprint Showdown on Saturday night. The No. 42 Target Chevrolet was in contention for a top transferring spot until a mishap in the final segment relegated it to a fifth-place finish.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series headed home over the weekend to race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Sprint hosted their annual Showdown and All-Star races where drivers didn’t compete for points but for bragging rights. The Target team raced in the Showdown with hopes of finishing in the first or second position to transfer into the main event. Montoya started in the seventh position in the two segment, 40-lap race and ran in the top-five throughout. In the final segment, the Target Chevrolet had slight contact with fellow competitors causing some damage and handling issues. Montoya held on and maintained track position to finish in the fifth position.

“We learned a lot from this race,” Montoya stated. “The Target Chevrolet was good and I think we’ll be really good next week when we come back to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Yes we wanted to race our way into the All-Star race but when we got together with the No. 31 it ruined the handling and to still walk away with a top-five finish is huge.”
