Study: Mobility is key shopping tool this holiday season

10/12/2016
With 46% of shoppers ready to start holiday shopping online and in-store in early November, retailers need to be ready.

As shoppers begin holiday shopping next month, make no mistake, mobility will be a mainstay this season, according to “Unwrapping Holiday Insights: The 2016 Retailer Guide to Consumer Trends,” a report from RetailMeNot.

Millennial shoppers will unsurprisingly lead the charge, as this group is almost twice as likely to shop online or on smartphones this Black Friday. Specifically, 74% of shoppers between 18 and 34 years old will use a smart phone on Black Friday, and 97% will follow suit on Cyber Monday, the report said.

While holiday deals will spur overall consumer attention, more than eight in 10 shoppers (83%) will use up to six channels to find the best holiday deals and promotions. And these options run the gamut. For example, nearly one in five shoppers will use a deals and savings app during the holiday season, the report said.

The better the deal, the more shoppers are willing to spend, data revealed. For example, 31% of shoppers will likely spend more money with a brand that offers free shipping; 28% will increase spending if they get a nice percentage off of their total purchase, and 17% of holiday shoppers will spend more if they can get specific product deals.

“It’s important for retailers to ensure they enter consumers¹ consideration early in the season,” said Marissa Tarleton, chief marketing officer of North America, RetailMeNot. “Having the right promotional mix is key for reaching these shoppers.”
