A mind is a terrible thing to waste
Target and its hometown newspaper, the Star Tribune, are doing their part to promote early childhood reading by hosting a book festival Saturday, Sept. 12. The free event, to be held at the Hyland Lake Park Reserve, will feature celebrity book readings and signings, live entertainment and musical performances designed to promote children’s love for reading as a fun and recreational activity. During the book festival, parents and children will have the opportunity to learn about Target’s commitment to providing reading resources for families, as well as programs and partnerships the company supports that encourage parents and children to read together.
Target should be commended for such efforts, as should parents who read to their kids at an early age and remain engaged in their ongoing education. They already understand the importance of reading and are inclined to bring their kids to a reading festival. Conversely, the kids most in need of increased exposure to reading and their disinterested parents won’t be anywhere near the park for the reading festival.
