The many shades of Macy's spring fashion
NEW YORK Bright and spirited art by Elizabeth Karsch served as the background for the blooming Macy’s Spring 2008 Fashion Preview that was held on Oct. 18 at Macy’s Herald Square. With color as the defining factor of the collections, customers can expect fun, yet sophisticated items competing for closet space.
“We’re making a major deal out of pink,” said Stephen Cardino, vp fashion director men’s fashion office, as he walked through bubble gum colored mannequins adorned in refined classic pieces. Various shades of pink leave a slightly bubbly impression - from cotton candy polo shirts in men’s to fuchsia terry cloth dresses in the beach category.
Macy’s women’s wear will ease into spring with very light, almost nude pinks starting February. When combined with slate grey garments, the transition from dreary winter months becomes clear. Those who want to welcome spring full force can certainly awaken their fashion senses with the bright shades of pink, especially when it comes to shoes and purses that make for a perfect accessory when paired with a plethora of different jackets. Trench coats, anorak inspired jacket, three-quarter sleeved boxy jackets with rounded lapels and other nylon outerwear will kick start the new season.
As the weather gets warmer so will the color palette. Expect to see bright yellow and green on the radar. Art print dresses steal the spotlight with their abstract patterns that are apt to move with the semi-glossy silky fabric. The shape patterns vary, as so do the shoes that match the dresses. Best paired with black and white shoes, the style can change from patent chunky shoe to sleep pointed toe. Jewel embellishments around the scoop neck collar create a touch of out-on-the-town glamour. Once sunshine intensifies, Macy’s plans to roll out their safari inspired collections complete with print dresses, multi-pocket jackets, ‘tribal’ jewelry in gold and natural browns. Orange, different shades of brown, tan and cream emphasize the migration into summer.
The junior’s department won’t be shying away from color either – add 70s and 80s inspired graphics, track jackets and cap-sleeved tees to the combination and it’s clear that spring is all about pure, edgy fun. Young Men’s plays up color with contrast against different washes of jeans. The patterns range from crystal applique patterns to bright stitched logos. With a strong emphasis on Streetwear, Macy’s brings in Black Label graphite tees.
Grey was no stranger in the Fall 2007 collections. Come spring, the darker charcoals are transitioning into soft smoky greys that mix remarkably with other pastels that have penetrated the men’s lines. Suddenly, yellow striped shirts are paired with vests. Cardigans and shorts, especially shorts, pave the path for the ‘active aesthetic’ of a clean wardrobe persona. “The season will be about the shorts,” said Cardino. Contrastingly, bright colors are great for accents. Typically men won’t be wearing a head-to-toe out fit, but by having a splash of color mixed in with ‘safe’ colored jackets and pants, they can give off a bit more energy from their outfit. The message this season is about inviting the young guy to embrace the classics and look polished, yet comfortable. Perhaps that’s why, according to Cardino, athletic footwear will go with everything.
