How big was Amazon’s sales increase on Prime Day?

7/16/2015

New York -- So, how did Amazon make out with its 20th anniversary super-sale event on Wednesday?

Not surprisingly, the online giant wasn’t giving out many details, beyond saying that members shopped at record rates during its first ever “Prime Day.” A different story played out on social media, with consumers expressing frustration and disappointments about the quality of the offered deals.

Amazon’s daily sales in the U.S. were up around 80% as of noon Wednesday in New York and 40% in Europe, compared with a year earlier, according to ChannelAdvisor, the Associated Press reported.

“Prime Day peak order rates have already surpassed 2014 Black Friday,” said Greg Greeley, VP Amazon Prime. “Prime members have already bought tens of thousands of Fire TV Sticks; 35,000 Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray sets; 28,000 Rubbermaid sets; and 4,000 Echo devices in 15 minutes. The Kate Spade purse was gone in less than a minute. We also sold 1,200 of the $999 TVs in less than 10 minutes.”

But many consumers were less than thrilled about the quality of the deals, and that some of the deals were available only at certain times.
